As its a quiet day all round (even the Signals Lists are not chattering), I would like to hand out a BIG Thank You to Paul for all the effort he has, and continues to put into this great site. Thanks Buddy ...

As one of the 'old guy's' on the site, (served 1951 - 66) I enjoy the diverse contributions and repartee among the members, and the information that emerges is sometimes mind boggling .. I know we all enjoy reminiscing about our days in the 'tate' and the antics we got up to and the ...

Hi folks,

May I ask that you those of you who have Google Earth and who have not already done so, download the locations files from the Google Earth page and check them out.

I am pretty confident that the vast majority of sites are accurately plotted but, due to scarcity of available information, I have had to take an educated stab at one or two of the locations by using other sources. There are a few that I cannot even take a stab at.

I am sure, also, that there are more than ...

One of the main reasons I originally accessed BAOR-locations was to get more information/make contact with individuals I might have known during my time amongst the British families in Hemer (1971-72) and Soest (73-74).

Interestingly enough, there hasn't been a lot, if any, presence from former Irish Rangers (which was the regiment that was stationed in Hemer when I was living in Iserlohn) or dependents thereof.

I'd enjoy hearing from any Rangers, or more exactly from dependents as ...

I remember reading about a little-known incident in October 1966 on the Elbe River near the village of Gorleben. Apparently there was a diplomatic dust-up between the two Germanies over the West German Waterways and Shipping Authority's right to survey the channel across the entire width of the Elbe, and the GDR barricading their progress with their Border Command boats, claiming the border ran down the middle of the river, not the eastern bank as claimed by Bonn.

I've seen photos of the pocket card that BAOR apparently issued to everyone. I don't remember ever seeing them in my day, but we were subjected to many indoctrinations on arrival in BAOR and 'reminders' as time went on, including posters displaying the plates.

We were admonished to contact the nearest MP unit or any establishment that was handy and say: "rubber glove", ...

THE HISTORY OF THE CROSSED KEYS.

For over half a century, the Divisional sign of the Second Division has been the Crossed Keys. It was a familiar sign around India later on in the war, and the flag with the Crossed Keys flies today in the little Westphalian town (Lubbecke) whose municipal coat of arms is, by the long arm of coincidence, the Crossed Keys.

In the early days of World War II the War Office ordered that each formation should choose for itself some device which would be ...

This week marks the twentieth anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Not only the wall but the beginning of the end of the Iron Curtain.

What memories do you have of the Iron Curtain?

As a civvy new to Germany in 1979 I could not believe that fence the first time I saw it. On the other side in the distance were ordinary people working in the fields. Did they see me and if they did what did they think? For some stupid reason I picked up a rock and threw it over the fence

Hello everyone, my name is Norman Angell.

I discovered this website when I was trying to search for Tofrek Barracks, Hildesheim and Stirling House, Hannover. This is my first posting on the site.

After completing a driver training course at Elles Barracks, Farnborough, followed by a clerical course at Willems Barracks, Aldershot, I was posted to the RASC Training Wing at Sennelager in March 1955. After further training I was then posted to the Station Staff Office at Tofrek Barracks as ...

Quite a while ago, I seem to remember a point being raised about Unit titles on the main site. I think it was via a PM or e-mail through the main site.

It was connected to how Unit titles (be they Battalion, Regiment, or whatever) were entered on the individual pages. I, for one, am in favour of entering titles in such a way as they are relatively easily identifiable by those visitors to the site who have little or no knowledge of the Services as a whole, without upsetting those who may ...

Here are two Temporary Attached Personnel who were an integral part of 20 Armd Bde Signal Squadron, York Barracks, Munster, 1952/54. Pete and Diddy were staunch members of the OR's Cookhouse, the Cpl's Club, Sgts Mess and Officers Mess, never turned down a free meal and were devastated whenever we went off on a scheme. Here they are in one of their favourite hang outs outside the Brigade Signal Centre where they could keep an eye on all the comings and goings of the Lads.

Ladies and Gentleman - a question.

Where would you suggest that a page for the Royal Marines is placed

1. In the Regiments and Corps Section as a Corps?

2. In the Royal Navy Section under their own heading?

3. In their own "stand alone" page on the Main Forum?

Plans are afoot for them to be included on the main site as well.

Suggestions please as to their best location.

When I was in BAOR [1951-1952] we were not allowed to wear civvies outside the camp, except for sports kit when moving to a sports field.

Uniform, and the only concession was shoes instead of boots

I believe much later, you had to wear civvies unless on duty? Is this correct?

When was this rule changed?

I wonder if anyone can help?

When the Army ceased painting the Formation Signs and Arm of Service markings on the front and rear of vehicles in the sixties, they were replaced by a discreet number on the front and rear showing the owning unit, i.e; 1/40 for 1 Div HQ.

Does anyone know of a source that lists these numbers, or if anyone remembers the number for their unit could they please let me know.

Thanks/Mike
