It looks like all units will be out of Osnabruck by december 2008.

Here is a link to a letter to parents in Osnabruck giving details of school closing down dates and contains info. when and where units are moving. Most are going to UK with the exception of The QDG, who were due to go to Sennelager in "Late 2007"

I am looking for a bit of local help from Osnabruck!!!

Basically, I need some help to locate the area of the town where many of the car show rooms and sales were based who sold cars to BAOR squaddies in the early 70's.

This area I am looking for was the other side of town from Roberts Barracks. In this area my wife worked in a restaurant which was on the 2nd floor above a German car sales place . ( Autohaus???).

Reason for my looking is ,we are trying to remember the restaurant ...

Hi all,

I was based with 37 Army Engineer Regiment in Roberts Barracks in 1951 and 1952.

Looking for information:

When did 37 AER arrrive in Osnabruck from Crickhowell, Wales? I believe late 1950, but have seen listed as 1951, but I arrived February 1951 and the unit was already established.

The other half of the barracks was occupied by another AER, if I remember 38 AER?

Also maybe in Roberts was a REME unit, perhaps even a postal detachment?

Have looked at the RE ...

Okay,

I've had a bit of time to kill lately and after my National Service Memories post, decided to do a bit of digging on the German websites. I know this is not strictly BAOR history, but may be of some interest in any case.

Here are a couple of images from postcards:

The first is from around 1925 and shows members of 1st Bn, Inf Regt 78, 1 & 2 Coy.

I can't think why it didn't have a 'Wish You Were Here' or 'Greetings From Osnabrück' message enfaced on it. ...

Hello all,

From the main sites Imphal/Mercer Barracks page:

Quote:"Situated in Dodesheide just outside Osnabrück itself, on the way to Belm these barracks, I presume, were built by the local German workforce on behalf of the British, during the second half of the 1940's, early 1950's. It certainly does not show any of the panache that Belfast or Roberts Barracks display. Indications point to a governement with struggling economies and extremely tight budget - post war. It is also ...

I have a price list from the Village which was located at 1 Herrenteich Str. which dates from about 1978. At that time £1 was about 4 DM. A large Edelpils cost 3 DM. A measure of Asbach 2.50, a shot of Apfel Korn 1.50. Happy days

Someone, somewhere mentioned that they thought Imphal bks were built just after the war. I would contest that statement as when I was there in 1972 there was some kind of accommodation below the main square which had (apparently) been either an underground hospital or ammo dump. The buildings were possibly built after the war but I think the site had been an army barracks during the war hence the underground hospital/ammo bunker.

Can anyone confirm this?
