sennelager - Normandy Barracks

I arrived at Normandy Barracks with an RASC clerical draft from Aldershot in April 1958. We spent five weeks there on a continuiation course aimed at the BAOR way of working before being posted out to various units around Germany. The barracks were ex Wermacht and were almost luxurious compared with what we were used to at Aldershot. The food was also an improvement. Paderborn was the nearest town but the trams were infrequent and it seemed difficult to get back at any time of the day. ...

SENNELAGER MUSEUM

Hello!

I have found a photo of a german "Jagdtiger" tank destroyer. The caption says that it was taken at the Sennelager Museum in 1948_49. It was made by a guy serving in the Danish Brigade in Germany at the time.

Anyone knows anything about this museum or the place where this info could be? (Location, why it was closed, what happened with the vehicles, was there more than one "Jagdtiger"?)

The bars of the Sennelager Strip

Travel down Bielefelder Strasse today and those of you who served there in the good old bad old BAOR days, will hardly recognise it. Gone is 'Geordies Bar' which has been replaced by a supermarket and gone is Jocks Bar (the original Jocks Bar) which is now a Church.

Some of the old haunts remain though, but it just doesn't seem to be as active as it was late 70's mid 80's (ish).

I have to say that most of my formative years were spent on that street....along with most of my wages.

I had hardly unpacked my bags in Fallingbostel 1965 when I found myself on a soul destoying fortnights holiday in Sennelager guarding something.

I see that on the Sennelager site there is the mention of SITE GUARD.But no interaction.

I know that I was locked into a compounded area for a couple of hours at a time and with real live bullets.

What was I really guarding? Can one say or might the 42 day rule cause a knock at the door.

What was the reasoning behind all units doing ...

Can anyone remember exactly where the SKC was located in 1970? I seem to remember walking from the MQ's through some woods before getting there. I think it may have been down the end of Artillerie Strasse? I had a look on Google Earth but still could not decide.
