| I'm back on again after a long absence. I hope to be back in on a more regular basis shortly. Just to start off on the right foot - a question. Any N.S men out there know of a Keith Bradbury (nickname possibly "Brad"). Believed to have been "somewhere in Germany" around the time of the Cuban Crisis. There are a couple of photographs, but it is that long since I uploaded anything I might make a cock-up, so bear with me. Did it (right way round now) Keith Bradbury is sixth from left in the middle row. Next question (you are not getting away that easily) - What is the cap badge?? Paul.

| Have you seen on Youtube the salute scene sequence with Richard Attenborough? It is a classic bit of acting. Type into Google: 'Salute Scene at Guns of Batasi' The film has been broadcast quite a few times in the last 3 yrs on various TV channels. I think it is worth watching! |

| When, during the autumn of 1961, they slapped another 6 months on to National Service they also announced the recall of reservists. I was about half way through my AER commitment and received a letter from RASC Records that I was on standby for recall and telling me where I should report. Much to my relief, and my employers', it went no further. Infact I don't think anyone was recalled. It would have been an interesting scenario however. The NCOs would not have been dealing with a load of green rookies but a bunch of knowledgeable barrackwise bolshies.

| With reference to the first photo (promise I will turn it around the right way), I have received a couple more. Can anyone possibly identify the bridge behind these two smart young gentlemen?? And can anyone identify the Armoured Vehicle in the photo below?? It is known that it was American, but not what or possibly where. |

| In reference to the armoured vehicles, makes me think of an early version of the M 113 APC. The huge flat peices look like tiller boards for water crossings. |

| Thanks for the answer Hardrations - it gave me an idea where to look. It turns out that it looks like a fore-runner of the M113, the M59. The link below is a webpage with a photo, less the flotation gear. The welds are the same at the front, and the trackguards are the same. http://afvdb.50megs.com/usa/pics/apcm59.htmlPaul. |

Trim Vane, for some reason I think we called ours a tiller board. Could be wrong (usually am). In the picture of the M 59 O see they have track guards don't seem as wide as the M 113, they were for water crossing. The IDF took them off, seems they don't do many water crossings. I also remember seeing the German version M 113 and it had a gasoline engine (earlier version I think). It just howled and must have been a real fire trap. While I'm on this about the M 113. All the IDF M 113's I saw destroyed in the Yom Kipper war were completely gutted as they are made of the same aluminum material that the RN ships were that burnt out in the Falklands war. All you would see left of the M 113 was the tracks, engine, drive train and back ramp where there was usually a neat 4 inch hole made by the Egyptian rocket.
The M113 is built of aircraft quality aluminum |
