I did a boarder patrol with the 3rd Carabiniers around Helmstedt about 1967
Found this clip of what the place looks like now

The British boarder service soon found themselves out of a job back in 1989

Hi there,
Doing a stint in Berlin 85-88 really brought the cold war home. Border patrols, checkpoint Charlie, train guard duty amongst other stuff. Did a border patrol from Hohne in '81 which was interesting too !!
Miss them days......

I remember the awful train journeys through East Germany with the blinds down and trying to peek at the aliens called East Germans every time we stopped on route to the zone.from Berlin.

Hi folks, Thank you for your kind welcomes. Berlin Rocking Horses as someone pointed out similar to Quick Train in the zone. These exercises were frequent in that the whole brigade would be called out at the sametime and each battalion, and supporting elements took up strategic points in the Berlin area eg; bridges, railways etc in the event of a soviet invasion. An air raid siren would be sounded and we all turned out of our beds Sleep etc in the early morning or when ever brigade felt like it, with all our kit and head off in our vehicles.I think that each battalion had in those days six APC 432's and rest were very old Mercedes Benz trucks which were full of the troops heading to their respective places.I'm sure the Berliners were living in sheer hell thinking the possibility that the Russians were coming.....again.
