RLC Conductor's Badge. I meant to have said slightly different backing, not the actual badge.

They could appoint a minion to carry the badge on a pole, y'know, like the Roman legions did.

The trouble then of course, would be title for the geezer carrying the pole ! Suspect

The pole would be a lance would it not?

So L/Cpl acting/unpaid/unloved/underfoot.

Hi there,
Talking of rank when I joined my regt. in 1980 we called all staff sergeants 'sar't major' it was a cavalry thing I think, by the time I left in 2003 a staff sergeant was a 'staff sergeant'.......no idea what happened !!
Before anybody else says it the SSGT who was the SQMS was always.....Q.
Cheers

I'm glad you mentioned that Pinky.

It was the same in QOH.

Did you have to address your C.O as "Colonel" ?

The old memory's fraying at the edges a bit here Jim.

Did not the QOH officers call WOs "Mister" ?

You may be right Brum. One other thing I remember from the 7th Hussar days, there was a silver/bronze statuette at the side of the square in Tidworth which everyone pasiing would salute. Can't think what it was, any clues Brum !

I remember a statuette Jim, there was also a gong (inscribed with the names of the fallen of 3H, I think), that you had to salute. Another tradition was having to stand at attention when the last post was played, no matter what you were doing. This took place in the afternoon on working days.

Trouble was, all this was only restarted when the regt was in Hohne, blokes like me who'd only been in "B" Sqn during the 3 yrs that the squadrons were scattered hither and yon, hadn't got a clue what was going on !
