Ach So !!!! And thinking maps I bet few remember an expensively produced issue of around 1954 which landed in command posts during that year's major event, " Battle Royal" . When we never had sufficient numbers of 1: 25,000 sheets to issue to those who really needed one, a surfeit of "goings maps" had unit clerks over burdened in folding duties.
Goings maps were normal 25 thou sheets overprinted with coloured patches which were said to indicate stuff like areas where a truck could trundle across without being in danger of sinking out of sight. Sound idea, but bloody useless even if it was accurate. Coloured over printing obscured detail so a squaddy might know the bearing pressure of the terrain, but he'd little idea of where it was. Must have kept some bright spark busy for months thinking up that one.......... Goings maps quickly disappeared more rapidly than a 10- tonner on which it was hoped that an increased tyre pressure could be used as a buoyancy aid for crossing the Dummersee.;
