Both my parents served in the CCG after distinguished army service for the whole War. They met and married in Hamburg. Does anybody know of any source of information on those who worked in the CCG?

Greg

GJP

Welcome

Finding accurate authoritive information on the exact role, deployment and members of the CCG is proving extremely difficult

I do have a duplicate copy of the 1949 Senior Staff List which does give an outline organisation and names of key post appointments. Your parents might be listed

If you PM me separately with details of your parents names I will get back to you privately.

Control Commission Germany 1946.
Hi, My mother and father were both involved with the CCG in Herford, Germany in 1946 and knew it well. My father was stationed in the Control Commission Germany, Car unit which was in the Barracks on Vlothoer ( now near a Tennis platz) along with my Grandfather. Also in this Barrack block, with the VW's etc there were the horses and these were available for families of CCG members to ride. Families, which included my mother, were put up for stays in what we think is the Konigens-Mathilda Gymnasium on the same road, which was then a military Hospital, school and taken over by the CCG along with many other buildings on Pen Hill. They used to visit a small tea rooms again a little bit down the same road call 'The Cottage'. Still further down the road is The Schutzenhof where many events were held for CCG members. When my mother arrived in 1946, the station was hanging off it's hinges, blown apart with all lines dangling and blowing in the wind. Many local German people including children with bare feet and virtually nothing on, were begging for food at the side of the railway lines. Hard to imagine today. War is not a nice thing, for either side!

Hope this helps. I'd like to hear from anyone with further information about the above.
Andrew.

Read the article with interest (valoppypuss contribuition) suspect the Schurzenhof is the now redundant Schwarzenmoor Ranges.

Found some links to CCG (BE) in the Public Record Office at Kew where data is stored under Foreign Office tags (FO 1065 Title:
Foreign Office: Control Commission for Germany (British Element), Personnel Administration, Maintenance, and Organisation Branches and predecessors: Registered Files (HQ, CAO and other Series)
Description:

This series contains files of the college at Brunswick where staff of the Control Commission for Germany (British Element) were trained.

In the film news reel of a visit by Princess Margaret to Wuppertal, at 3 min 24 secs there is a view
(front) of a Rolls Royce which carried the Princess in the wet-weather programme.

The registration plate looks to be CCG 1300.  There were rumours even when I reached BAOR in the 1960s
that CCG(BE) had acquired (early post war) a number of RR from the previous government (captured/confiscated)
and these were used for Royal Visits, as here, VIP occasions and  even for brides on their special day.

(Best  we had at Sennelager in the late 1990s was a London taxi - similar rôles, moving barracks to range
- no LRs were draught/rain-proof, and there were hairdos and hats to consider).

CCG(BE) was dismantled in 1955 and possibly the vehicles went to HQ BAOR or the JSLO Org in Villa Spiritus.
There may be further info out there.  (In the meantime a friendly contact at RR  is looking into the history of
the newsreel item).

Greg

My Old Man stayed out there after the war on CCG in Hamburg.
My mother and I joined him in 1947 until 1950 when we all came back to UK.

Not all together sure exactly what he did (I was only three on arrival). Some sort of transport manager for a fleet of around 1000 cars. He had a car and chauffeur (Charlie Muller - I really liked Charlie) whenever he wanted it.
We live firstly in a flat in Odervelder Strasse (not 100% sure of the spelling of that one) and then in Benedict Strasse (number 6 - the master bedroom was round! Funny how things stick in your mind)
With no English kids to play with I played with German kids and, apparently, by 4 years old I could speak fluent Hamburg Platt.

At 11 they sent me to a school that taught French - and I hated it! There was a school that taught German that I could have gone to.

I joined the Army and at 19 was back in Germany. In all I spent 16 of my 24 years in Germany and really enjoyed it. Dortmund, Lippstadt, Hameln, Herford and Detmold. Indeed I almost stayed over there.

I went back for a brief visit to some friends in Bispingen last December. Their small town hadn't changed much, but Hamburg had changed drastically and not for the better. I also realised how much German I had forgotten in the 40 years since I left.

I didn't see a snellimbiss and the lack of bars was terrible.......And trains didn't run on time!!!!!!!!

So although I was out there Greg that really is all the info I can give you. I was too young to remember anything else. Now I'm too old to remember.
