TD, I understand your logic but in my (limited) experience I have found that it most cases it is merely a name change. The people running the show on the ground are normally retained on changeover of contractor. When I was in Kirkee/McMunn Bks, Colchester there was two Sgts Messes, one run by the Gunner Regiment and the other run by 19 OFP/AAC/REME. The Gunner Mess was staffed by the Military and the other Mess was staffed by a contractor, their Mess closed at 2300hrs and ours closed when we said so! drunken drunken

Yes there has been a lot of changes. Most of the messes are now run by contractor. Gone are the days of Sqn bars run for the guys by the guys. Same with waiters for mess functions. If messes need to use military staff for waiting on then guess what....They have to be employed by sodhexo and paid by sodhexo. Gone are the days of ED payments.

It is definetly sad to see it.

On one of our messing meetings the Naafi manager asked why the guys were not using the naafi bar. The simple answer was sadly there was no atmosphere in the bar area as it was open plan and right next to the eating area. The guys would rather go down town and pay normal pub prices than sit in camp. He asked how they could make it better and the simple answer (which didnt go down to well) was knock it down and give it a rebuild to make it more pub like or move back to the old area they used as the camp bar before which was now redundant and occasionally used for functions.
