I was Royal Signals Infantry in 72/73 on a two-year tour with a permanent Bde Sig Sqn in Ulster we were called upon as individuals Cpls and below to cover infantry units for 48 hours to fill in on patrols when the lads were on R&R…happy days pale

Gnrs, RAC, R Sigs etc who were deployed on Op Banner served in an Infantry role for the duration of their emergency tour. The tour wasn't the pain in the a***, it was going away for another 6 months to retrain for your primary role. Sad Sad

Same thing happened to us in 2 Sigs Sqn during the FLQ crisis in 1970. We were deployed in the infantry role. At DND HQ's on Elgin St in Ottawa. The only people not employed as so were our cooks.

Same thing here during the Suez Emergency, I was attached to the 2 Bn Scots Guards and was given a patrol consisting of guardsmen, and corpsmen ... we were to infiltrate the the enemy, the Coldstream Guards, and try to bring back prisoners, no BS, but we were the only patrol to achieve our objective and bring back prisoners .. the Brigade Major nearly had pup's when he found out a R Sigs cpl was i/c patrol.
