I was with my Regt 45 Field Regiment RA on a scheme in Belgium (cant remember where ) I was issuing petrol and diesel from jerry cans to the Regt vehicles. And on the day my right arm began to swell up and was hurting like hell, I saw the Field MO and he says it will have to be lanced but not here so its back Barracks at Dortmund and to the MO. It was lanced (no anaesthetic used ?) but it went wrong I was taken to the BMH at Iserlohn when booking in the Duty Officer said where was my Greatcoat and Tin Helmet "blood was seeping through the bandages" and I was on a charge, I explained what had happened then he said the Items had to be on the bottom of my bed when he does his rounds in the morning (and they were). I spent 14 days in hospital and seems it was petrol and diesel poisoning. On release the same Duty Officer said this time I would not be charged but if I came in again without the items I would be!
P.S: Does anyone know why we had to take our great coat and tin helmet when admitted into hospital?

Many thanks,
Alan

At one time there was probably a reason for it Alan. But the duty officer was probably one of those narrow minded types who no body wanted in their unit ( even his fellow officers) and he probably got a woodie on for his cheap power trip. He was probably posted to BMH Iserlohn so as to be out of the way at the expense of the poor medics. Ran into a few of those kind of losers in our Army and I'm sure that in to-days present military there are still those kind of losers. They trulely believe that by f**king the ranks about, they are proving to some body (maybe a pretty nurse) what a manly officer they are. On the other hand I met and worked for some truley great officers who far out numbered those in the rear ranks. Remember, rear rank officers were there so as to lick the bums of more capable officers, in front of them.

Well John Boy when I remustered trades from RTG Op to Cook. It was wonderful not to have officers leaning over your every move. All my Base Foods Officers were good people and other wise, most officers tended to keep their nose out of the kitchen as it was beyond their ken to understand what was being accomplished. Incidentaly I was the one trusted to go to the bar down stairs (in the officers mess) for a bottle of sherry or wine for cooking. Being a non drinker had some thing to do with it. Mind you though, I had plenty of volunteers to check out the quality of what ever I brought up. Knew I could count on them to give me an honest opinion. Also when pensioning off early, the Base Commander tried to talk me out of leaving the forces. So I must have been doing something right and he was one of those officers who leave a lasting good impression on all he has dealt with.

Quite agree there the cookhouse was almost always run by the non-coms highest rank I saw on a regular basis was a WO2 even then they were mostly in the back ground (supping tea) lol! PS check out on internet Combat Chefs it was a TV program back here in the UK lol! lol!

Jim

The ACC most certainly certainly had officers, some direct entry and others through the ranks, Director ACC was a Brig. Practically all the officers at the School of Army Catering were ACC.

If I may digress slightly (ooh never done that before!). I remember one guy at Detmold cookhouse complaining about a cockroach in one of the food trays, stew of some kind I think? The cook made a joke about extra meat and how it wouldn't hurt said soldier. ACC Warrant Officer noted the slight altercation and asked soldier what the problem was? On being told and what the cook had said, Warrant Officer picked up said food tray and slung it all over the cookhouse floor. Made the cook clean it up and put him on a charge.

Went up in my estimation!

Interesting sidedish to the main thread (apologies for the intended pun)

ACC responsibilities were limited to the actual catering staff/skills at unit level (irrespective of size). The provision of rations was a RASC then RAOC responsibility back upped by the unit QM if/where local purchase was authorised

Seem to remember there was an ACC WO in Brigade HQ who acted as a roving advisor to the dependent units. Could have been a small ACC (headed by a Captain/Major) team in Div HQ to coordinate ACC across the Division. Could have also been a similar small ACC team in Corps HQ in Bielefeld headed by a senior Major

This situation if confirmed explains in part why ACC Officers were rarely seen by most soldiers in BAOR

Alan, What year was that?As when I joined (1970) it was only a 37 Patt Haversack you carried with a strange list of contents long forgotten (KFS, Mug, Underware & PT Shoes come to mind)

I was admitted twice to Cambridge Military Hospital, once by appountment, where I had to wear full No2 with of course the 37 Haversack, and once as an emergancy where everthing I needed was provided.

I was also in RAF Wegburg in Germany in 1974 where it was like a hotel!

Because they wanted us to, Its the Army was excuse enough to them.

I never had to do the clearance chit thing as I was only going in for 3 days (ended up as 9) and just put my bedding in my locker.

Oh I forget to say, you had to carry the haversack just to go sick as well.

It was nice to see Goldmohur call it by its proper name, Small Pack. (haversack ? HAVERSACK ?)

Heavily blancoed, (BLANCO, see under "BULLSHIT"), and nicely squared off with plywood, the Small Pack was wot yer carried yer Small Kit in.

Small Kit, reporting sick for the use of, used to be your washing & shaving kit, towel, plimsolls pyjamas, KFS & mug.

I'm pretty sure there was something else but it's gone . . . it's gone !
