| I`ve been to Gdansk, Gdynia, Warsaw and Berlin in recent years - in many ways the most interesting places I have ever been to - particularly if your guides are old enough to be able to judge both the Cold War years and the current years. | |

| Mind you, in all fairness, it's not just the hapless Russian soldier one could take the mickey out of on this....
During our first tour (59-62) there was a small booklet of cartoons available....rather adult, I think looking back, so much of it was over my head (I was 6 at the time).
The one cartoon that stuck in my mind all these years, and I still think is funny, was of a rather bemused/confused looking grunt sitting in a very small, very tight, bathtub with his stubbly legs bent so that his knobby knees were up around his stick-out ears somewhere, holding a back scrubber brush. Of course, what he was in was no bathtub but a bidet! Such a thing was rarely if ever seen, let alone used!!, in North America and many of us had no idea what it was upon encountering one for the first time. I shudder to think what some folks maybe thought it was for!! I certainly hope...gawd, pray!!...no one mistook it for a drinking fountain!!!!!!!!!!!
I did hear one or two stories about how it was believed to be a foot washer...icky enough, all in all, but not horribly gross!

| we had a bath every friday, needed or not. Tin bath, plenty shillings for the gas meter to get hot water, and a brick under on end of the bath. the older you were the further you sat from the brick end, deeper see. Once I discovered the shower i just loved it, couldnt keep me away from it. | |

| Stage coach, don't forget the stage coach. We have baths too. You have to have somewhere to keep the coal.[/quote] In Glasgow, we kept the coal next to the fire, saved arguing over who was going outside in the Winter to fetch it. We kept our Greyhounds in the bath. | |

Yes, they started to move our regt from Hemer to Dortmund while we were in NI. It was like living in a quiet civilian suburb. Not so quiet when we had an "Active Edge" though ! I only lived there a few months before being posted away.
