I wrote the poem below sometime in the 1970's .. writing it today would need it to be encyclopedia size.

The Vanishing Regiments'

Reading through the Army List it soon becomes evident,
That the Army of old has taken punishment,
Gone now are the Lincolns and the South Stafford too,
Gone now are the Enniskillen who fought at Waterloo,
A hundred plus regiments from right across the land,
Were ordered for economy that they should now disband.

But you cannot disband loyalty or put it on a shelf,
For it is such loyalty that is the nations wealth,
So as we stand and listen to the Piper play Lament,
We should also take our caps off, to the Vanishing Regiment.

'they only fade away'.

Very touching and so very true

so is it true that by 2015 16,000 serviceman/women will lose their jobs .? A few less cap badges no doubt lol!

Just to rub it in, that second list is now out of date. The Cheshires (and others), have been swallowed up by the Mercian.

Gentlemen

The situation is actually far worse

If the poster was produced today the badges would be

Top row
Five Foot Guards Regiments unchanged, delete The Royal Scots, add Royal Regiment of Scotland

2nd Row Total change delete the lot

Regiments now represented would be
PWRR, RRF, ROYAL ANGLIANS, Yorkshire Regiment, Duke of Lancaster's Regiment

Similar for third row which becomes
Royal Irish Regiment,The Rifles, The Mercian Regiment, the Royal Welsh Regiment and The Parachute Regiment

Leaving just two Regiments for the fourth row

The Royal Gurkha Rifles and the SAS

I did read several years ago, when we had the last reshuffle, that the Light Dragoons were scheduled to be amalgamated with the Buffs. Apparently their new title was to be The Light Buffoons. Smile

Sad to see just how many regiments have disappeared, never to be seen again.

I was quite surprised the other day to find the grave of a Pte in the Mercian. It feels like the regt has only been around for five minutes yet there he was, killed in Jul 2010.
Don't time fly eh ?

I noticed his number was 3005 ****. That's a big jump from mine !
