On two occasions members have stated that units had been stationed at Maresfield Barracks Herford.Maresfield was the home of 7 Signal Regiment(and it`s previous titles)from opening to closing. When they moved in, in the early 50s,it was to South Camp only.North Camp was the home of a couple of other units for a few years untill 7 Sigs took that over, the exact date i dont know but it was after 56 and before 62.
So gentlemen for those i doubted ,please accept my whole hearted apologies.

The proof of the pudding

Gordon,

Fabulous picture. Spent some happy years in 7 Signal Regt (1963-6). Cannot remember the gates into North Camp but can see the Gym at the top of the road. Also no caravans there when this photo was taken.
My troop 'Sierra' was half way up on the right hand side.

Memories, memories.

Gordon,

Great photos. Brought back a lot of memories. Initially, it wasn't all there when I first went to BAOR in 1952. It was then 1 Corps Signal Regt located in Hammersmith or Wentworth barracks.
I notice in the photos that one of them is location unknown, yet two rows down there is a larger photo of the same view entitled looking down from block 13 toward the square.

What a haven of information this site has, not only BAOR but almost everything else.

Thank you Gordon. Were these former German barracks or purpose built for BAOR?
They seem similar to those in Soest/Deilinghofen we Canadians had.

Hardrations,

Maresfield was almost certainly build post war. When I was stationed in Harewood barracks 1952-4, the only main barracks which were ex-Wehrmacht barracks in Herford were Hammersmith, Wentworth and Harwood barracks. The latter was a Panzer barracks. Our cellar in 1 Medium Wireless Troop, 3 Sqn had some original murals presumably done by German soldiers. At that time I do not remember any camp called Maresfield.

Gordon,

As you know, 1 squadron were further up the road past your number 5 Squadron.
