| Can you just imagine the dialogue in No10 Downing Street ? "Prime Minister, the Argentines are getting aggressive over the Falklands again" (PM) "Very well, a show of force is required". "Assemble a Task Force, two Aircraft Carriers should be enough to . . . . . oh !" | |

| Cant see a problem meself, OK I'm no expert but lets look at the facts...
The only reason the Argies successefully invaded the Falklands in 1982 was because the only opposition they faced was a section of Marines, and as as good as our Marines are I'm afraid the odds were a tad one sided however, things are very different now. With a resident infantry Battalion and assorted support and logistics, four or five Typhoon's, a couple of frigates (and probably at least one submarine) The Falklands garrison may not be very big but I'm sure it's more than capable of defending The Falkland Islands against a determined Argie attack, and the Argies know it.

The Regiments who faught and died in the Falklands are today being cut down by a Tory government, OK a coalition, but it's a Tory coalition. The Parachute Regiment is being cut back, the Guards division is being reduced and the Gurkhas are being punished for Joanna Lumley's campaign. I loathe wealthy politicians who consider sharpening pencils a dangerous activity.

Did anyone see that brigadier on the news last night ? (He was only a child !). He was giving a bit of a spiel which was, really saying to the Argies-"come on then, if you think yer 'ard enough !" The thing that I noticed though was, 1. his beret badge was heading for his left ear and 2. he had a Fusiliers plume (?) stuck behind his badge. Since when do staff officers wear regimental symbols ?

| Nearly all staff officers wear some sort of affiliation to their former Regiment/Corps.
For example, General Sir Mike Jackson used to wear a red beret.
General Sir David Richards has worn a forage hat & a cross belt
Major Gen Andrew Mackay wore a Tam o'shant
General Sir Nick Parker wears a Rifle Corps cross belt with the badge on it
I could carry on but you get the message

We had a Lt whilst I was with 249 Sig Sqn, Singapore who used to wear his red berret, having been posted in from 216 Sig Sqn (para). The OC let him get away with it.

Orde Wingate a real hero of mine ( note Pithe helmet ) You know, the Brits tried to say that Wingate knocked the jolly old Jap for six in Burma. Absolutely not true, it was Errol Flynn. Some years back, after a period of sickness, I had to go to Liverpool to be examined by a doctor before I could resume work. The doctor turned out to be an ex-Chindit and he was so overjoyed that I actually knew what a Chindit was that he forgot all about the examination and regaled me with his memories for over half an hour !
