When did you serve with 24, Big Jock? I was with them from 71 - 76.

I had moved to the top of Barker by then, QRIH, C&S Sqn, I joined 24 wksp in the summer of '66 looking after the wheeled 'A' vehs

Willy left the Regt when we were in Dortmund got a job running the Bar in the General Walker hotel, Berchtesgaden.

I've been trying to remember the name of the Jock who ran the pig farm, he used to slaughter them himself and flog some to the local pubs, the one done the road from Barker, can't remember that name either......bloody old age!

I was in the General Walker in 1974,75 and 76.

It had a very quaint American run reception and telephone service.

You booked a phone booth in reception to make an international call.

They then paged you when your call was 'ready'.

Much more sophisticated, the Yanks. I remember in Belize, queueing outside the telephone exchange from Midnight on Christmas Eve until making the call at 0600hrs. (Run by the Scaleys!)

We certainly had loads of Attic, unit bars in hobart in detmold, but i don't recall any in Ripon Bks in Bielefeld.

We had one in the QM`s Dept at 7 Armd Wksp but it was a converted barrack room amongst the accomodation and was usually only used for private functions.

The RCT had one in the attic of our block in 70/71 when I was with the LAD in Ripon bks.
Also in Detmold we had one across the road in the cellar, [AAC] Ian.

I think I remember the air corps one Ian, it was the closest to the back gate, so handy for a beer on the way home to Hakedahl. I'm struggling to remember where the LAD was in Ripon though. We did have a great CPL's mess in Ripon, did you ever get to use that?

The LAD was at the top end of the bks, if you imagine yourself facing the front gate it was at the top right hand corner, if memory serves, we were with 14 sqd RCT, a lot of our work was on staff cars, as you know Ripon bks was full of officers, hence the cars. As for the Cpls mess, well that was in the days when I was still a rebel, it took my posting over here to wake me up to the fact that I was wasting my life away, the first 5 years I was in were spent avoiding jail and having a laugh, the next 23 months saw me get promoted twice, much to the surprise of most that knew me! regards, Ian.
