| After trade training at RAF Locking, I was posted to 646SU in August 1958 when it was based at Obernkirchen - to the west of Hanover. Two months later in October 1958 we moved to RAF Scharfoldendorf where I served out my National Service - leaving in August 1959.
I have several photographs of the buildings and personnel, and would be willing to share if there's any interest.

There's always an interest eMes, even for those of different , service, time and place. Post'em man, we look forward to seeing them and any tales to go with your service. Ahh yes. Welcome to the site. Pay no attentions to nurses orders, we all share our meds.

| Hi, I'll start with one of the schloss at RAF Scharfoldendorf in January 1959. This housed the dining room, offices, chapel(?), and the library. On the roof was an observation tower with good views around the site, and where we sited aerials occasionally. The building corner on the rhs is the NAAFI, and I was standing on the road from our barrack blocks. Sited on the Ith Hills ridge, we had more or less continuous snow cover from December 1958 through to March 1959. | |

| M,
I have to admit that RAFG is not my strongest area of knowledge. So, may I ask; what is an SU? I also don't recognize the RAF stations you've cited. Were they airfields?
By the way, nice shot of the station.
Cheers, Dan. | |

Cheers, Dan. Hi Dan, An "SU" was/is a Signals Unit. I don't know what others did but things like radio communication and similar. The stations I served at in Germany were small and certainly weren't airfields, and in my two years of National Service I only saw RAF aircraft when they were flying along the valleys below us in the direction of the East German border, shortly before which they would turn round and return to their base. The Ith Hills ridge on which we were sited was around 330-360m (~1,000 - 1100') in our area, and hid the aircraft from East German radar.
