Our forces are lower than in the Great Depression of the early 1930s, and the politicians haven't learned a thing since then.

I have learned that it does not matter the name of the leader/politician, they all are attendees of the secretive BILDERBERG GROUP.

This is a group of previously secret bankers and so on, where which the leading politicians get their orders.

Our army now is smaller than the casualties on the first day of the Battle of the Somme; 1st July 1916.

Some logical thinking gone on here............ thirty odd years ago there was an urge to develop pilot-less aircraft for warlike purposes. Now the RAF are moving towards having aircraft-less pilots.

Yes, these are definately bad news, but it correspond to the information, that the troops stationed in Fallingbostel will left earlyer until 2015.
Sadly a long history will end. Most Germans remember of the british soldiers with good attitude. The Germans from Wolfenbüttel which remember the time british troops were in station, tell me in worm words their memories.

DO you know if this is also including the Royal Regiment of Scotland (SCOTS)/5. Bataillon ?

Politicians do not care about these issues, even learn from history.

Mac_WF - do you mean the 4th Battalion, if so, they are scheduled to re-locate from Fallingbostel to Catterick in 2015?

Just a thought - we could give the Syrian government all our bungling, incompetant civil servants from he MOD - that should bring their forces to their knees in no time. And while they are away we could give their jobs to all the poor buggers who through their total stupidity were denied proper equipment and welfare and now find themselves kicked out.

It has always been the way in the British Military.Once you leave you are gone forever and left to your own devices.Even if you are fortunate enough to claim a war pension/compensation from them, you are put through the mill, and you have to prove negligence.I know of people who asked for a pension, only to be told that there are no records of the injuries they sustained. My only advice to those serving at present and that is to make sure they get their injuries recorded on their records and if necessary get a photcopy of the records. As they say folks, you are only a number in their eyes and cannon fodder for the politicians.

Our Illustrious Pillock-ticians - between Mr Camermoron and the Tory-Conmen, and the Liarboring Party and its Pretend-Marxist halfwits, and the Limp-Dumbers of the coalition, really have no understanding of the Military. But then why would they. Very few amongst our well heeled and pseudo-liberal political elites really have litte or no ideas about anything. Very few of them have served either in the regular forces or the reserves.

So what is to be done about this? What a Face .. except maybe a good kick up their collective khybers come the next general election. They are so arrogant and full of their own bulldroppings, and have their collectives heads jamed up their own collective political butts, that all they can hear and listen to are the echos of their own thought parps! affraid

Without seeking to stand up for politicians or whoever else took the decision to ditch parachutes, maybe we should consider the threat the country faces, switch off hearts & engage brains.

Historically, the Germans discarded the use of parachute troops after they got a bloody nose in Crete, similarly we took a pasting at Arnhem, where supply and extraction of the paras was always going to be a major consideration. That rules out dropping a battalion strength force in Mali or Syria....... All shout "God Bless America !" if those despised politicians get us involved in more than the immediate threat, one more likely to be small groups of ragheads armed, at most, with assault rifles, RPGs and bags of home made explosive.

Think back, we have had no requirement to drop a substantial force of paras into action since Suez. That cock-up was 57 years back, which some might comment makes the parachute as much of a requirement as a longbow. The Parachute Regiment will still be around but their means of deployment will change, as it did in the South Atlantic. If it's a question of spending a limited kitty on either Mastiffs and Jackals or parachutes, I guess the APCs should have priority.

If the Parachute Regiment are to lose their status as "Airborne" troops. How will that affect their training eg: P Company etc. Will they disband two battalions as I believe that 1 Para have been taken out the equation of Recce Troops along side 22.The Herc is being replaced by the European equivalent. What else will they take from the front line troops.

I think you are right Cartav, the need for a mass drop of troops by round parachute is long gone. The paras as a unit will survive I am suse, but their strength was never in their ability to jump out of a plane. it was what they did on the ground that mattered.

My tribute to the Para's written some 25 or so years ago ..

Len (Ciphers)

The Red Beret

Arnhem and Oosterbeek was where the Para’s bled,
They fought outnumbered and outgunned amid their mounting dead,
Even German generals admired their tenacious stand,
As they stood and died together in a strange and war torn land.

Bloodied and battered they carried on the fight,
Till after nine horrendous days they were withdrawn, under the cover of night,
Ten thousand of the bravest had dropped out of the sky,
Three thousand only crossed the Rhine, one thousand had to die.

But misfortune and dishonour are two words far apart,
The glory of the Para’s at Arnhem had its start,
Their Colours bear the honours for which so many died,
From Arnhem to the Falklands, the Red Berets worn with pride.

To the Para’s.

Len Payne.

It's the Parachute they'll lose Jock, not their Airborne status. If the para lads are retained ( and I can't believe it will be otherwise) aerial insertion is likely to be
by helicopter.......... look at their trg stuff on the para's website, there are more Chinooks than parachutes on view....... Alternatively, if there's 1000 yds of airstrip,
the flyboys could put down a C 130 or the new A 400 when, and if, it arrives.

And if operations aren't part of a link up with a following force of conventional infantry, extraction would also be by helicopter or, if conditions allow, by fixed wing transportation.

Whilst I agree the age of mass parachute landings (ala Arnhem) are long gone and heli insertion will be the norm, I have a concern which is the impact of morale

Would the paras (as we all know and love the cheeky little rogues) still be the same fighting force they are if they loose that physcological factor the Red Berret gives them? If the Red Berret gets issued for jumping out of a Chinook its just going to be another craphat.......
