Hi Gordon,

Been looking at the subject of an award for Veterans Diamond Jubilee Medal. There is a link that all ex servicemen can go to for signing a petition to this effect. It is as follows :
http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/3899
Like all these things those that have strong feelings over the supposed injustice of ex servicemen and women for served during the Queen's reign feel slighted at not being included this time round (they were not included in the Silver Jubilee medal), can sign a e-petition at the link above. The closing date is 15th August 2012.
Come on fellas, sign up.

Ah yes, the Silver Jubilee Medal !

'twas said that a helicopter flew over North Rhine-Westphalia one day, scattering Silver Jubilee Medals as it went. Our Adj and the RSM skillfully caught one each.

We had some kind of formal parade once. Afterwards in the bar I asked the OC what was the medal he was wearing? Silver Jubilee medal he replied looking rather sheepish. Damn cheek, it was us lackeys who did all the vehicle cleaning and preparation for the Sennelager parade. Think they had a raffle for the few that the officers and seniors never got.

At the time I was stationed at 40 Army Support Regiment RE at Willich and only one medal was allocated and the CO got it a but a Sgt in the Engineer Base Workshop worked all night to get the saluting dais finished and a medal was found by taking it off somebody else from another unit...

Talking about my subject on Jubilee Medals etc, going back further into dim history, I remember the Coronation Medal 1953. Was serving in Harewood Barracks at the time and I think there were seven medals allocated. You know, CO, Adj, QM etc AND the very first squaddie to pass through the gates who happened to be a National Serviceman - good luck to him. Not even the contingent who repesented the Regt at the Coronation parade in London got the medal BUT Prince Charles (5 yrs old) and Princess Ann (3 years old ) got one each, damn it !! and all the others which followed.

Gordon,

Just been looking at the Veterans web site on campagne medals. Perhaps the one you mentioned blue & white stripes is one of the various UN medals. Have a look :

http://mod.uk/DefenceInternet/AboutDefence/CorporatePublications/PersonnelPublications/Medals/BritishArmedForcesMedals.htm

Sorry for being absent for some time. Havn't had a computer available recently but bought a new one so should now be OK.

I think, Signore, you'll find that it's the Teutoburgerwald medal.

It's awarded to those brave men who unflinchingly crapped in the woods, without any form of lighting or risk assessment.

NB Personnel from units higher than Regimental level not eligible for this decoration, they never HAD to crap in the woods. tongue

Gordon,
That diamond shaped medal seen being worn by RBL person is the Commemerative Diamond Jubilee medal (not the issuued one) that can be purchased by those that have a spare £39.50 to part with.
