Ferrets on Parade in Berlin

I'm not sure if I have posted this photograph already, but it doesn't appear so. It's of a mounted parade somewhere in Berlin (I've never been) of the Berlin Brigade. Based on the cap badges visible on the turrets and using the BAOR Locations as reference I would put the date as somewhere between 1981-1983.



The first Ferret is from the 4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards from Smuts Barracks. The second and third vehicles are from the King's Own Royal Border Regiment from Montgomery Barracks and the final two that I can definitely determine are from the 2nd Bn, Royal Regiment of Fusiliers from Brooks Barracks. The remainder are not recognizable to a specific regiment, but also in Berlin at this time was the 2nd Bn, Royal Irish Rangers at Wavell Barracks.

Note how the mounted spare tires have been painted black.

The Ferrets on Parade in Berlin (a very nice picture) are shown on "Unter den Linden" probably the most famous boulevard in Berlin with the Victory Column shown on the right commemorating the Prussian victory in the Danish-Prussian War. When I saw the Column in 1976 it looked like every Allied rifleman WW2 had fired a round into it.

When stationed in Berlin as part of the brigade and it coming round to the Allied Forces Day parade.We had to clean clean clean all the vehicles that were on the parade and paint them like new.Even the 432's which had just come in were not allowed to move out of the barracks in case they got dirty.Land rovers,Bedfords 4x4, Merc Benz 910,Ferrets were so clean the MTO of our unit did not want to use those vehicles in case they got dirtied.I never did wonder why the annual FFR and this parade needed those vehicle to be so clean as after all they were all working vehicles and were used for their purposes of everyday life in and around Berlin.All for the benefit of the Russkies who would be watching with interest to see what is new to our miniature force in the city.
