I don't think that they provide a duplicate of your Red Book.

I'm reading my 'red book' as I write... military conduct exemplary! I was bust twice and went to nick...a few times. I enjoyed my time in the army immensely and wouldn't change a thing, but in all honesty I don't think my conduct was 'exemplary' Hey ho.

I too had an "Exemplary" grading. Several periods of detention, bust down from Sgt and a total of 13 Regimental entries, finished as a WO2 - not bad. Wonder where I would have been if I had behaved myself? drunken drunken

Yes I have similar thoughts, but try not to dwell on it lol. I can remember after my very first spell in detention the CSM gave me a lecture. I was unhappy with my first posting and wanted out (Not from the army, just that unit) The CSM told me I would not beat the system, and that the best thing I could do was to keep my nose clean and get on with things and with a bit of luck I'll be posted within a couple of years, I was even promoted but within six months got meself bust. Of course the CSM was right, but you don't see it that way when your a hot headed 18 year old who knows everything! I did eventually wise up, but by then it was too late.

MCTC affected people in different ways, we had two lads who visited MCTC one of them had nightmares about the place and swore he would never go back, the other had two spells in MCTC and seemed totally unconcerned about a third visit should it happen, he was eventually kicked out which was a shame because once you got to know him he was a good lad.

Got my records a couple of years ago. Quite sobering to read. Also, have my late Father's records going back to the 1920's. very interesting but do not seem that complete compared to some details I already had. For instance, he was posted to North Wales in 1945 but there is no record of this. It should be recorded because I remember living there when I was 11 years old with my Mother & Sister and going to school etc. I have queried this with the Worcestershire Regimental Records and they cannot come up with anything - very strange. I have the proof and they havn't any answer.

Seems to happen like that all round Jimsigs, on a slightly different theme, I have been doing my family tree for over 30yrs, have gone back to 1610, funny thing is that on my maternal line I have birth and death certificates for my Grand and Gt Grandfather and yet no matter what lists I look at they are not there (not even shown on census)

I've read Les that Cenuses taken back to when they were first carried out in around 1831 were a bit of a hit and miss affair due mostly to the type of people they had knocking on the door. Also, then a mighty lot of people were not even registered on ANY lists. I have a complete Census list of 1881 which obtained a few years ago from the Latter Day Saints (Mormons) in USA. they are on 25 CD's and make compelling reading. Can even do a search by street and was able to see who was living in the place above a shop we lived in, in the Edgware Road. There were two families then in 1881 and they were tailors by trade.

The red book as someone has already said, is a joke.It is signed by someone who hardly knows you for a start. They look at the overall picture of your service and previous reports by officers whom you have served under for the short time that they have been your pln, troop, commander etc.How on earth can they judge you as a soldier when they don't actually know you. confused

I agree.

I also know a couple of lads who, for personal reasons, had to buy themselves out. Because of this, they got less than an exemplary standing. Seems unfair.

As much as it grieves me to agree with a Scaley, I agree with rucjock. The Red Book was a fecking, (Mrs Brown can say it, the so can I !), joke.
I had "exemplary character" and all the other stuff in my book, and all it did was help me to march smartly into the dole queue behind all the other proles.
Thank you Mrs Thatcher, Ave Imperator, moritori te salutant, you Tory bitch.

It is a bit of a joke. I had 13 Regimental entries but a character assessment of "Exemplary" and like Brum, became one of Maggies Millions for a year. What do Officers have when they retire, do they retire? I reckon that the guy from Moscow is manipulating the width of the pages to distort our brains or could it be the Efes? drunken drunken

Re the Red Book, it was only the 'assessment' that was contrived to fit the facts .. the rest of the book in my case anyway was factual .. i.e.: places served, trade, medals, courses etc.
As for the mention that 'siggies' didn't have a Red Book, well if you were a Regular you did, not sure what kind of discharge book NS men got.
