PostSubject: St Davids Barracks - Hilden   7/4/2014, 13:13

Hello,

I'm new to the forum and hoping someone out there can help me with any information.
I'm taking my Father to Dusseldorf in June and he wants to visit Hilden where he was based in the early 1950's. I'd like to surprise him with information about the barracks. Where are the barracks situated in relation to Hilden town ? I know they are no longer army barracks but are the grounds accessible to the public ? I'd like to take him to see the buildings. Any info out there before June would be fantastic.

Guy

Welcome.

Perhaps you can persuade your father to let you post a few memories of his time in Hilden.

Which unit was he with?

He was in the 2nd Infantry division (BAOR44 ?), Lance Corporal Roy Foster from October 1952 to May 1954. I told him about this site as he has some photos of the Hilden site that he's going to sort out.
I don't think it will be possible to get too close to the barracks on our visit if it's owned by the military, but for him to visit the vicinity will be good.

Guy

Your father is correct. The post code for Headquarters 2nd Infantry Division was changed from BAOR 4 to BAOR 44 shortly before his arrival.

I look forward to the photographs

Guy you can always ask at the Guardroom if your father can look inside the Barracks if you explain the reason, who knows you could be surprised - nothing to lose by asking. Good luck.
