| My Father was Tech/RQMS Peter Biggs in Salamanca and across the road from his office/store my Mother and sister worked in the Salvation Army canteen. It was a very busy place. I spent a lot of time on both sides of the road during the holidays from School in Hamm, working with my Dad one day and Mum & Sister the next day. My Sister was married to Scotty Allen, great bloke who taught me a lot, oh happy days. | |

| Just like many old Barracks, this one has been turned into an industrial estate. The last I heard was that the Church was still standing and I think the old Guard Room was also being used so the entrance to the site would still look similar. My old school, WBS, in Hamm shared the same fate. It was torn down , apart from the Dining Block because of historical importance, and new Car show rooms and industrial units are/have been erected. | |

| I spent four, very happy terms at WBS from 1961-62, absolutely loved it. you may or may not have seen the attached photo biggsy, it is, fairly obviously a reconnaissance photo showing the bombing of the railway marshalling yards at Hamm. Forward and just to the right of the bombers nose is a familiar group of buildings: | |

| Useful info here, Pborn3....nice and succinct.
My father was with 4 Ord Field Park and attached, as I recall, to 1 Field Ambulance (forget how that came about or why). Of course, that was when it was Ft. Chambly. Dad quite liked it out there and it was a fairly easy commute from our Married Quarters in Soest and all in all a rather pleasant drive.

You've been away for too long. 1 Field Ambulance is an interesting unit to study. It seems to have originated stationed at Fort Chambly, moved to Fort Anne, and moved again back to Fort Chambly between 1953 and 1970. When was your father on attachment to it? I have the establishments for both the ordnance field park and the field ambulance for the late 60's. Maybe it'll show the field ambulance having an ordnance supply section or something similar. I'll check it out. Cheers, Dan.

| Hi Dan, The answer is much more mundane. Most units had to have a number of "Regt Med Assts (RMA)" ie "Medics" as additional qualifications. Each RMA could have a main trade like Driver, or Storekeeper etc. and also be 1st line medical support.
In Barracks all the qualified Regt Med Assts would be "pooled" and put to work in the Medical Centre - in this case run by 1 Fd Amb RCAMC.
They could expect to be kept "current" and be employed:
Assisting in running Soldier's Sick Parade (taking and testing samples) (and before civil labour scales were increased - assisting at Families Clinics) Maintaining their parent unit Medical Documents - drawing up "inoculation - jabs" days Scheduling PULHEEMS tests Keeping med kits* complete, in date and be available for exercises or special events (Sports Day, Parades, Church Parades) as first-line medical cover-
Duty Medic at night and weekends in medical centre.
*NOT vehicle kits | |

Cheers, Dan. Yeah....I have been remiss in keeping up with you lot for the last while...quite a while actually! Life and all that. My dad was attached to 1 Fld Amb circa 1970/71, so he was based out of Ft. Chambly. Same when we rotated back to Canada and he was stationed at Currie Bks in Calgary (where I still live -- in Calgary not Currie which is now a civilian housing development -- tore down a lot of the old hangars etc. and built upscale houses) -- he was attached to Field Ambulance here as well, although was always Ordnance Corp/Supply Tech.

...he was attached to Field Ambulance here as well, although was always Ordnance Corp/Supply Tech. According to my copy of the establishment for 1 Field Ambulance at Fort Chambly, which came into effect on May 1, 1968, there was a MWO Supply Tech in the Clearance Company in the CQMS position. All of the other Sup Techs were corporals. The Field Ambulance, like the rest of the brigade (or rather battle group) moved south to Lahr during October, 1970. But I recall you saying that your dad went to Vetter to work at the depot until 1971. Cheers, Dan.

Cheers, Dan. Hmmmm....I believe my Dad was, or became, a Warrant Officer during his time at Chambly so perhaps he wasn't attached to Fld Amb as I thought (although I know he was once he was based at Currie Bks in Calgary). I mean, it was all so long ago, and I didn't pay particular attention to what my father 'did' anyway -- I was 17 years old and far more interested in hanging out at the TeenHut, listening to music, and hitting the gasthofs!
