PostSubject: RAF in Bückeburg   18/12/2016, 21:10

RAF Bückeburg is now the German Air Force station Achmer - Helicopter Trg School,

Christmas 1945 the RAF flying elements had installed themselves in the Schloss at Bückeburg - the Schaumburg-Lippe family are related to Queen Victoria and Prince Phillip- The Schloss and its Garden Fetes (Christmas Fayre) are popular in modern times.

Somehow the Christmas Tree installed in the Schloss that Christmas, with real candles and potent spirits in the hands of high jinkers conspired to cause a fire in an upper storey of the Schloss! Fortunate it was a traditional winter and there was snow to help extinguish the blaze.

Paddy

Thank you, as I have recorded elsewhere was very familiar with the Schloss in the mid/late 60s (the RAF had long gone). Was the Schloss the Senior Officers' Mess for HQ RAF (G) located over the hill in Bad Eilsen?
