I am still trying to catch up on both the Forum and the Main Site, but i have come across a discrepancy (NO - I am not the QM checking up on your kit Very Happy )

It is said that 2 L.I. were in Peninsula and Barossa, moving from one to the other. 2 L.I. are listed as being in Peninsula 1984 to 1987. The occupants next door are listed as The Gordon Highlanders up to 1988, followed by 3 RRF (no mention of 2 LI).

Can anyone provide proof of who was where please???

Paul.

i realise that this reply has been a while coming, but it is worth the wait. Very Happy

the info about 2LI being in both camps is true. what happened was we were initially posted to Peninsula bks in December '84. with the Gordons based in Barossa. then in early 88 they moved to fort George and as 3 RTR were arms plotted to move into Peninsula because of the fact that it had suitable 'accommodation' (full size hangars) for the tanks which they had; Challenger 1s (with an impeccable record for mechanical breakdown within the first 10 track miles). we moved into Barossa and then handed over to 3RRF in early '89.

the accommodation in Barossa was nowhere near as good as Peninsula either. that aside the whole Hemer/Deilinghofen experience was brilliant!

2LI seemed to always be posted to locations which were away from garrisons. and of all the places posted to, i enjoyed Deilinghofen the most.

Most of my 4 years in Germany were in Deilinghofen ( 64-69) with a few months in Iserlohn were just great. Still go back for visits. Made good friends and good memories. Lahr was the pits (71-74) in comparison. Went back in the fall of 84 as a civy and had a walk about Fort Prince of Wales (Camp Einz) with the RSM's permission. Armed guard on the gate. Sometlhing we never had to worry about. Most of the Camp is gone now. Industrial park.

I agree with you, I was 1 Gordons and the Worcester and Sherwood Foresters were in Peninsula
before 2 bn Light Infantry who were posted in to make up the other Infantry Bn in 6 Airmobile Brigade.
That existed from the mid 84 until 87 went from being mechanised to walking everywhere especially
when the RAF or AAC couldn't fly(leaves on the line or something like that).
A most enjoyable place to be and I would like to go back and visit just to get a decent GYROS mit POMMES and MAYO...

I think it was the Worcester and Sherwood Foresters when I went through on a look see in 84. The young Pvt. who was my escort said something about them being a demonstration battalion in Salisbury Plains prior to posting to Germany
