Stationed in Minden at Melitta House, a former coffee factory which had a pretty severe cockroach infestation, and fell in love (or something like it) with one of our NAAFI girls. She and I went skinny dipping in the Weser one night, but fell out over some triviality. I was in the water laughing at her and she stormed off also laughing but for a different reason. She bundled up my clothes and went off with them, leaving me to walk home. Luckily it was around 3 am and no-one was about. Except the guard commander on my arrival. Needless to say, Sgt "Curly" Levinson was not amused.....

Hi Skinny Dipper!

Melitta is still a large coffee roaster/producer. Just wonder if you splashed in the Mittelland Canal which

is a lot closer to the Melitta patch than the Weser ?

But do tell with which unit you were stationed in Minden and the name the services gave to your "Barracks" in the Melitta factory compound?

It sounds weird, Pborn, but although I can recall comrades' names and faces, many incidents, the layout etc of each barracks I was in, the actual names of the units totally escape me! When I have related this in the past it has often met with scepticism, as if I was lying about ever having even been in these places! The only thing I can do is describe things and hope that someone can come up with some idea of what I'm on about. So here goes:

I joined the Corps on October 20 1954, the very day I was seventeen and a half. I asked for early enlistment and 2 days later I found myself in Somme Lines at Catterick where I underwent 6 weeks basic training, followed by several months elsewhere (Vimy Lines?) training as Operator Wireless and Line (OWL)

From there I spent about 3 weeks in transit at the depot at Newton Abbot, from where I was posted to Bunde in Germany. A few months later I was transferred to a squadron at Minden, based in Melitta Haus prior to the opening of the Signals block at Kingsley Barracks. It was while there that our arm patch was changed (from what, I don't remember) to portray a mailed fist.

I was sent for further radio training to Lemgo. I think this made me into a 2nd class operator. I think the term OWL was dropped around that time. And so back to Minden (and a nightspot we named the Coloseum, but therein lies another story!) Then in '56 I was off on an exercise in Berlin camped in the gym of the Olympic Stadium. There was an empty swimming pool with statues at each end. One end had a man and woman while the other end was a bull and cow. Overlooking the area was a building which housed a WRAC unit. The exercise was carried out in the Grunewald. Then back to Minden, and a Staff Sergeant named Snell, detested by many. Also another called Emery, liked by most. Next I was attached to the 9th Lancers in Detmold as related in an earlier thread.....

I then spent a little time in our new transit camp at Chester, from where I went to Kykkos? camp just outside Nicosia, Cyprus. Which was the most boring posting of them all!

That then, is my story. I'm sorry if it doesn't make much sense but then, because of my illness, it doesn't make much sense to me either! Smile
