1955, and we had just finished trade training at Catterick, and were now in  the depot  NA awaiting posting abroad. Payday arrived and, with my £2.10/ pay I set off, an 18 year old eager to sample the fleshpots. Drinking black-n-tans at 1/3d, I invited an old guy playing piano to have a drink. He asked for a pint of scrumpy, which turned out to cost 8d. So, being a fairly canny Scot, I decided that was going to be my drink from then on. Three pints of rough cider later I was legless.  Literally!  My head was clear as a bell but the legs just wouldn't work I was stumbling all over the place, Some of my mates stuck me in a taxi, feeling utterly humiliated.  So my resolve about cider crumbled and I have never touched the stuff since.

Well, I don't touch alcohol at all these days. No hangovers for more than 30 years. Boring, eh? Very Happy
