PostSubject: Wilhelmshaven 1947   22/11/2017, 13:17

My father was in the Royal Artillery and as a family we were in Wilhelmshaven from 1946 - 1949. Why didn't I question my parents to find out more when they were alive, I wonder now where families would have been living in Wilhelmshaven during that time as part of the army of occupation. I have no photos of that time. My brother was born in BMH Hamburg in February 1947 in one of the coldest winters ever. Although Prince Rupert School opened in 1947 I didn't attend until a return via Munster, Oldenburg and Delmenhorst in the 1950s. I boarded then from 1953 to 1957. I came across this site accidentally but wondered perhaps if anyone had details of life in Wilhelmshaven in 1947. Incidentally I am just reading a book called The Aftermath by Rhidian Brook centred around Hamburg at that time. Shortly to be made into a film in 2018.

Cavalier

Welcome.

Your memories of life in Wilhelmshaven in the late 1940s however sparse would be very welcome. What Regiment was your father with when you lived in Wilhelmshaven?

JPW

ps Could have signed in as Wyvern. We must be the same age, I am a proud Old Boy of King Alfre School Ploen and was a boarder there from 1953 to 57.

Welcome Cavalier

From my research of the early days of BAOR can confirm your father’s unit that was part of the 7th Armoured Division (Desert Rats)

30 Jun 46 – 2nd Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment Royal Artillery
Regimental Headquarters: Isle of Man Barracks formerly Ebkeriege Kaserne Wilhelmshaven
31 Jan 47– redesignated 8th Regiment Royal Horse Artillery (Anti-Aircraft)
1 Jun 47 – redesignated 55th Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment Royal Artillery

28 Jul 47 – Regimental Headquarters: Oxford Barracks formally Flak Kaserne Münster
The regiment was relieved by IV Field Artillery Regiment of the Danish Brigade Group – Den Danske Kommando

Best of luck with your research
