Cold War: evacuation? Empty
PostSubject: Cold War: evacuation?   Cold War: evacuation? Icon_minitime26/2/2018, 19:27

A question concerning the era of the "Cold War":

Does anyone remember a so-called "evacuation suitcase?" I saw such a suitcase in the exhibition "British in Westphalia" in Paderborn and I would like to know more about its contents.

It was said that if a war had broken out in Germany, the British families would have been evacuated quickly. The armed forces practiced such scenarios in exercises and prepared the families for the emergency.

I also wondered if there were any plans for the children staying in the boarding schools such as Ploen and Wilhelmshaven, partly far away from the families' locations.

I would be grateful for further information.

On the Canadian side of things  4 CIBG (my posting was in Deilinghofen) I was told that all married personal were to have a suitcase with the necessities by the door. Being single I didn't really see that.
Also, so the story went, one time before my firs tour (64-68) they had a practise evacuation in Hemer PMQ's as they were loading dependents onto the trucks German locals who didn't know it was a drill were bring their children over and begging for them to be taken to. No more such drills.
On my second tour (Black Forest) I was married and we were never told to have a bug out suitcase ready.
