Where were the Globe and Astra Cinemas in BAOR? And when if they changed locations?

The Globe in Deilinghofen (1971) was outside Peninsula Barracks

The Globe in Munster (1975) I am unsure of, but I think it was close to the main Bahnhof.

Where was the Cinema in Osnabruck?

Paul.

Hmmmm...if I remember correctly, the Globe Cinema in Deilinghofen/Peninsula Barracks was not outside of the camp but in it, although fairly close to a road running alongside the perimeter fence.

I am now trying to recall if both camps had a cinema but am pretty certain they didn't (why would they when the two camps were so close?), so I don't think I am confusing one with the other (been known to happen!).

I forget exactly where within the barrack site it was located but I know one had to go some distance into the actual site to get to it.

Paul,
Correct about the Kino (Muenster) being behind the Bahnhof!

In Hildesheim, Tofrek Barracks. The Kino was in the German end of the camp situated in the German Kaserne. I always remember the German Military guys (Fire Brigade from Flughafen) always supplied the 'Fire Picket.' How P****ed off they must have been!

One of our forum members was an ex Globe/SKC Projectionist in Hanover.

Can anyone, please tell me WHY it was necessary (as in UK military Globe/SKC (Service Kino Corporation) to have Fire Picket present, when I was not aware British UK civi cinemas did not?

Globe Cinemas were originally provided by the Army sponsored AKC , Astra by the RAF equivalent organisations who amalgamated into the SKC in the 1960s.

I was stationed in Munster in 1969 by then the Globe had been moved to a newbuild complex in York Barracks (Brigade HQ plus the Armd Recce Regt)

In the 1950s the Globe was certainly in the Bahnhof Platz, the main Families' NAAFI was close by

I was a service manager for SKC at the cinema on Lahr base for two years,I think it was the Globe, downtown Lahr had the Astra with a proper SKC manager,he moved down with us from Soest, the Werl manager went to Baden-Soelingen.Both cinemas , were inherited from the French Air Force, the punch line is that I never heard of a Fire Piquet being required, not even the base units like supply, maintenance and my own Movements section had them.

TonyE,

I was 3 yrs at AAS Carlisle. Fire Picket turned out each evening the 3 yr I was there for the cinema evening showing. It was a privelige. ie free entrance!

3 yrs long at Hildesheim it was the same. German Feur Picket from the German camp.

Maybe it was a British thing for Military Cinemas?

Alan,

Not a bad idea for the lads, the only problem would have been our French movies for the garlick snappers every other night, that would have been an administrative nightmare fitting the duty to language. We needed two paying customers to start the French film, one night we had only two and one was drunk and went to sleep the other guy left before the end of the first reel so the ticket boy gave the projectionist the high sign and he put the last reel in and ran it to the end, when the credits came up the ticket boy woke the drunk up and everybody had an early night.

Hi all,

Globe Cinema Osnabruck early 1950's

It was in the centre of town; got off the tram [getting on near to An der Netter Heide] at the main intersection of tram routes [used to be called Adolf Hitler Platz] a road leading south just a couple of hundred metres, you crossed over to the east side of the road as you passed a bombed building that smelled a lot [said to have been an officers club which took a direct hit]
Then you went through a hole in a large brick wall and into a paved area with the Globe to your right. A Nissen type building

Oh Happy Days

Cheers

The Globe in Muenster was conveniently located across the street from our favourite watering hole, The Lido.

a lot of the married men went but dont remember many of the single lads going not when the pigs bar was closer,if it had a bar it might have been different. Laughing

Hi Paul,

Yes An der Nette Heide was outside Roberts Barracks, just a short walk then get onto a tram for the city centre [In my days we did not pay on the trams, though we got a ticket; and if the tram was nearly full, our lads got on first before any Germans]
What I am not sure is where was the tram stop, seem to remember it was at the end of A d N H at a junction with a larger street, was this Bramsche Strasse?

As far as I can remember the tram route was fairly straight into town, a wide road tram lines down middle, usual cobble stone paved road. Google not very helpful because of so many changes.
Outside the Osnabruck Hbf main station was a massive cleared area, obviously bomb damage.

Surely, someone out there has more information; so many thousands were stationed at Roberts Barracks over the years!

Tony

Hi Paul and all,

Doing a bit of search
Osnabruck strassenbahn was closed 29 May 1960; so anyone serving after that will have no idea what I am talking about

We would have used Linie 2 which started at Haster Muhle, then down road L5 [which seems to be now road 68] to Nikolaiert then to Neumarkt
Cant find Nikolaiert on google maps, and Neumarkt does not seem to be a "central square" main interchange?

Obviously today I would not recognise much of the present Osnabruck except for Roberts Barracks that have not changed
So I am unsure of the exact location of the Globe Cinema, a pity

Anyone else help?

Hi again,

Tram line 2 ran:
Haste - Haste Muhle - Kornstrasse - Hasefriedhof - Stern Apotheke - Hastor - Bischofliche Kanzlei - Nicolaiort [crosses line 1 here] - Grosse Str - Neumarkt [crosses line 3] Johnanniskirche - Rosenplatz - Lutherkirche - Scholerberg.

Looking further I dont think it went along road 68, but the old Bramscher Str to Hestor; then it seems to have gone down Hesestrasse into Domhof and Nicolaiort was where Krahn Str and Herrenteich Str cross

The Globe Cinema was about 200 - 300 yards from the tram stop, but I dont remember which direction, only that I dont think trams ran down that street.
So much of the centre of Osnabruck has been rebuilt since my time in 1952.

Hope someone else can pinpoint location
I do have a photo taken outside the Globe, anyone want a copy please let me know [dont know how to do this]

Regards
Tony

The Cinema was in Woolwich Barracks which also housed the Pads Naafi when i was there. Cant rmember the road it was on but it was near Belfast barracks. It was basically through the main set of lights behind roberts barracks then hang a left. Not sure if it was somewhere else earlier but i was there from 95.

Dick Richardson was the manager of the AKC in Munster 1962. A big fellow with a walrus mustache like Jimmy Edwards. I met him when he was in uniform of a Sgt in REME whilst serving with 1st Commonwealth Division in 1954/5. Seemingly, whilst serving on active service, AKC personnel don the uniform of REME and NAAFI personnel were to be seen in RASC uniform. I think the latter were Known as NAAFI/EFI.

NIKOLAIORT, OSNABRUCK

Just seen the plea for the location of NIKOLAIORT in Osnabruck. .......... If Burgess 720 has a
town map, it's central in square C3. If not, NIKOLAIORT lies south of the Grosses Haus theatre and is a square approached by Krahn Strasse, Domhof, Grosse Strasse and Herrenteichs Strasse.

Many thanks for your reply

Yes we must have got off the tram in Nikolaiort, and we walked about 250 yards down a street without tram lines then on the left side through a hole in wall into the cobble area in front of the Globe [ I have a photo showing the front of the cinema.] If you want a copy please give me your email easier to send direct

So which street was it? It seems likely that it was Krahn Strasse.

Guess the site has been built over

I remember Nikolaiort Platz [not too much damage], and still have a tram ticket which in 1952 still gave Neumarkt as Adolf Hitler Platz

Osnabruck was a good posting and Roberts Baracks a great place to live.
For those of us who had a "proper day job" in the unit, with very little parades and bull; it was good

One parade I remember was everyone outside, and a woman walked up and down the ranks looking for some poor squaddie; a bit scary as we all looked similar in uniform

Research of Globe OLdenburg - being refurbished

REMEMBERING THE GLOBE CINEMAS AND THEATRES

German Teaching Fellow at the University of Birmingham, Dr. John Goodyear, is searching for soldiers’ stories on the Globe theatre in Oldenburg to unlock the mysteries of one of the last remaining Forces’ theatre in Germany.

Volunteers from the charitable Globe Cinema and Theatre Trust have raised 280,000 euros and are set to buy the abandoned building to restore it to its former glory. As part of the restoration process, John Goodyear is writing the Anglo-German cultural story of Oldenburg’s Globe. It is his hope that the publication will act as a blueprint for its future use.

The research project has also featured in the Express and Star in Wolverhampton, on both British Forces Broadcasting Service TV, expat radio as well as the university’s website.

Any member of services who would like to share their stories about Oldenburg’s Globe between 1945 and 1958 or, more broadly, on their experiences of the Globes across Germany are invited to contact Dr. John Goodyear at j.goodyear@bham.ac.uk
