BAOR (27CIB)
It has been   reported  that  Franklin's missing ship HMS Terror has been found in the North West Passage in the Canadian Arctic.  Franklin's  command vessel HMS Erebus was found two years ago. A Canadian Inuit Ranger, Sammy Kogvik, of Canada's Arctic Forces  was instrumental in  locating the long lost ship.  For reports on the history of Franklin's ill fated expedition in 1845 and  on the discovery of the missing second ship,  Google with the hashtag, Franklin Expedition Ship Found.

Hi Bob,

The interesting part I found, to be how the Inuit lad took pictures previously of the mast and then lost his camera. Thinking that it was bad luck on losing his camera, he kept the information to him self for some years. Still I'm looking forward to seeing if they bring anything up from the ship.

Hi Ross a.k.a. Hardrations,
Nice to hear from you again, Ross. I was also very puzzled why Sammy Kogvik, the Inuit Canadian Ranger in the Canadian Arctic Force based at Gjoa Haven in Nunavut did not report his find to his superiors. I went back to the article which first appeared in my newspaper about the discovery as well as to the report by Google on the internet. The Google report has expanded since I first looked at it. Ranger Kovik whose first language is Inuktituk said that he saw the mast sticking out of the ice six, seven, eight years ago. Was he in the Arctic Force at that time? He was also reported as saying that authorities were often skeptical of reports from the aboriginal Inuit.
I am also very interested in the further reports of artifacts found aboard the Terror which lies in very shallow water on the coast of King William Island. The Terror as well as the Erebus will be under attack from tourists aboard enormous cruise ships which are already plying the the waters of the Northwest Passage.
Good to hear from you and give my regards to Elfriede,
Bob

I think Sammy also mentioned that losing the camera was an indication of bad spirits not wanting anything to be said about his find.

Cruise ships have me wondering, if they'll be any where near CFS Alert.

https://i.servimg.com/u/f97/12/23/35/46/scan0010.jpg Has to be the loneliest cemetery in Canada. At the far end of the run way looking north. The crosses are for a Lancaster crew buried there, that crashed in 1955. They were actualy coming in to rescue another Lancaster that crashed with no injuries. The wreckage was still to be seen in 1980.I was there for the 25th anniversary. The stone memorial is the grave of a Scandinavian explorer who requested to be buried there. (Forgot which country)

Hi Ross,
Thanks for your further message on the discovery of Franklin's ship HMS Terror finally found on the coast of King William Island. Thanks as well for the three photographs taken at CFS Alert which I am going to send to my son. I recall your telling me that you served there. I think I told you that after my son, Jim graduated with a Civil Engineering degree from RMC he had to serve in the military for 4 years. On one of his postings he was sent to Alert to oversee the construction of a road from the airfield to the Base area. He left the Engineering base at Winnipeg on a Hercules with a bulldozer on board, flew to Montreal, onward to Thule, Greenland, and then the final leg to Alert. It was not an easy engineering project because of the permafrost. He first studied how the Russians carried out construction in the arctic which dictated that the road be constructed without bulldozing the permafrost.
I did not know that the crew members of the Lancaster which crashed there were buried at Alert. Were they actually interred there or are the crosses only memorials? I have only been as far north as Moosonee on James Bay which is billed as Canada's gateway to the Arctic but not very far North at only 51 degrees N. LOL
Thanks for the information,
Bob

My understanding is that they are buried there. On the back of each cross is a comment from that persons family. They only started bringing home military/civilian deceased in 70 or 71.

The posting has changed immensely since I was there. Less staff and more civilian contract workers.

When I arrived the only female on base was Linda a German shepherd. Who died I understand in 81 the last dog to be there. Female staff were posted in half way into my tour. Funny, same thing happened in Egypt when I was there, half way through and females were posted in. It was one of my best if not the best 6 months I had in the army. They gave me the bake shop for my full tour.

Some pictures of the wreckage
