37 RHINE WORKSHOP REME

Hi EVERYONE
Heres a photo of a coin/medal.which i got from e-bay
40th Anniversary.
37 Rhine workshop REME Mönchenglagbach

This is a photo from early 1963. My Dad, WO2 H Fraser, is third from left on the front row.[img][/img]

This makes me think of an ashtray that I bought a couple of years ago.

It said on the label that it might be made of armour plate but i think it is either Brass or Bronze.

It has the REME cap badge on it and the words Rhine Army 1948.

I wonder if it originated at 37 Rhine Wksp.

Any one have any ideas?

Cuxhaven Steve and I are currently involved in a project to try and identify the units and their locations comprising BAOR in the period 1945-50. It is a massive task but we are making headway

In addition to 37 Rhine Workshop and its longstanding rival 23 Base Workshop in Wetter there were large static REME Workshops with similar facilities in Hamburg Lubeck, Bad Oeynhausen and Hannover for starters.

On reflection, and doubtless other REME contributors will confirm, up until the mid 60s there was the REME trade of Fitter Turner and all the Field Workshops and the larger LADs had aatleat one such tradesman on their establishment plus a venerable "machy wagon" equipted with a lathe. Your brass/bronze ash tray could have been produced in a number of units.

Incidentally the Machy Wagon was another cause of envy together with the Office Wagon and Tels Repair Truck as it guaranteed its occpants a rrelatively warm and dry bolt hole on exercises. How the brass was acquired is best left to the RAOC creative accounting systems. isimilar

I know, I used to hear them snoring!!

As they say " Any fool can be uncomfortable". In my early days I drove a 3 ton Fordson Binner on ex - very comfortable and warm, later in life by 434 came with a full range of fitted extras to ensure ones comfort.

When i was at 7 Armd Wksp in the late 70`s I used to get collared to drive the Mashy wagon on excercises, as the users didn`t have the correct licence to drive them.

It was an interesting job, as they were Commer Q4`s from the 50`s, oh and one of them was an RL, a lovely truck, there were several in use at the Wksp in those days.

The only time the Q4`s moved was to go on exercise and to be serviced.

And OC LAD had to rough it in the back of a Landrover.

As Bob G has said in the past, all part of the toughening up process and learn by experience.

RHIP!! Anyone know how the Egg Banjo got it's name?

It comes from when you first bite into it and the yolk dribbles onto your shirt.

You look like you are playing the Banjo by holding the the butty to one side whilst wiping the yolk on your shirt.

While avoiding a debate on the origin of the term "Banjo", I must point out that an "Egg Banjo" was merely for newcomers.
Gentlemen, I move- "The Stew Banjo".
(I'll be very surprised if our Canadian cousins don't come in on this topic !).

Took another look at the photo of Rhine Workshop 1963 ... Dollars to Donuts that the Sgt standing extreme right is Fred Attwood who was a Craftsman at Hq 20 Armoured Brigade Signal Squadron, York Barracks in 1952/54 ...
