National Defence Medal -- just for donning the uniform?
Might just as well give it to a bustdriver or a traffic warden. As Brum says, we have the veterans badge for just that and another medal would just devalue the whole idea of them. If we srved in an area of conflict (except Aldershot on pay night!), we received a medal and that is good enough for me.

Its not so long ago that "the Land Army Girls" received a medal, I never quite understood why when the women who served in the ATS during WW11 have had no recognition.

Cliffo you mentioned Aldershot, I think we QARANC'S deserved a medal for daring to enter the NAAFI Club in Aldershot on a saturday night!!

Annie, I thought that entering the Aldershot NAAfi club on a Saturday night was all part of the QUARANC basic training - sort of tending the injured whilst avoiding the advances of the enemy!

Yes lots of tin huts and one was used as, and I use the term loosely, a bar. Not sure if it was NAAFI or not but i was a young soldier then. And the big ship was next to the little ship that I managed to sink accidentally, lol.

I used to take a motor launch up the river Boyne to Ebrington to pick up mail and SDS and on one trip I tied the launch up next to the ship, but not being a real sailor I only tied up the front and the tide changed and the launch went under the jetty and sunk.

I got a medal also, but the barsturards sent me back this time to Belfast, North Queen street RUC station next to the New Lodge and you do not get a second medal.

FFS When are they going to give up on this.. Some want a defence medal others want a full set of jubilee medals and a medal for serving in Germany.. Now the coronation is mentioned...If everyone has the same medal it means nothing, a bit like the vets badge...
Oops almost forgot Shelldrake wants his rootie gong...

Is it my imagination that the most shouts are coming from those who served in the 60s and 70s.when there were not a lot going

No it was a badge, those in the Womens Uniformed Services (ATS, WAAF, WREN etc) recieved the Defence Medal.

Just before I was demobbed, in '80, I came across a bloke I hadn't seen since '58.
Taking over as RSM of Woolwich depot, he had one ribbon, the GSM, with (I think), only three bars on it.
Now I think about it he had no LS & GC either.
