The title is the location where my Grandfather John Francis Glynn, rank of Private served in Graz in 1945-1948?

He married an Austrian citizen, Gertrude Ressman(n) on Dec, 14th, 1946 at the Garrison Church Graz. uncle was born in Graz in 1946, my mother born in Lambeth, London in 1948. Upon return to London, my Grandparents may have lived on the barracks of the R.A.O.C at Woolwich Arsenal?

I cannot find any immigration records of Gertrude on ancestry search sites, but if she moved to England with the British Military and with her husband still in the army, would this make a difference.

I am seeking to apply for my Grandfather's service records, will they provide any details of the relationship and the examination of Gertrude being an Austrian citizen as relationships between Allied service personnel and civilians was frowned upon and there was a 6 month moratorium. Gertrude would have been vetted to make sure she was not an enemy of the state, she was only 17/18 in 1946 when married.

My uncle and mother stated prior to their passing in 2013/2014 respectively that Gertrude as a child may have been a member of the Austrian Resistance could have passed information to such persons through checkpoints and security mandates of the Nazi/SS, other anti-democratic entity in Austria prior to the Anschluss with the Facist movement 1933-1938, and then WW2 from 1938-1945 in Austria.

My Grandparent's married so the relationship must have been approved by the British military and government.

My Grandmother may have been a Ballet Dancer and either my Grandfather went to the opera, or the opera attended the barracks in Graz? I would like to know how individuals would have been able to meet when one person was an Allied soldier and the other an Austrian citizen. If I apply for the service records with the MOD, would these details be shared? I have been told by my mother that Gertrude stood on top of a German tank after the Allies entered Graz in 1945.

I found out about this web page from research of


the R.A.O.C and the name of Jim Jarman who wrote that he served in the BOAR regiments in Austria.

Any and all information of guidance on how to move forward would be greatly appreciated.

I have pulled up the Marriage Index from:  Austria, 1946 John, Francis , Glynn and  Ressmann.

Have you ever tried to order the Marriage Certificate from the GRO?

Listed is the Index you should quote to speed up the search at the GRO if you wish to obtain a copy.
A copy was /is around £11?
