When I was stationed in Assaye Bks, Nienburg, 'twas said that there was a French soldier buried near the main gate. Every year a French officer would come and salute the place where his grave was supposed to be.
I never saw a grave, or a French officer, saluting or otherwise, while I was there. Perhaps there's a grain of truth in the story, has anybody else ever heard this one ?
Baz.
PS The guardroom was said to be haunted too !

A lot of the old WWI-era barracks were said to be haunted.

When I was helping clear out Fort Beausejour (I think...but it may have been Qu'Apelle) in Hemer/Iserlohn, a bunch of us (dependent teens and a few young soldiers) were down on the main floor loading bed frames and such. One of the soldiers had wandered off by himself up on the 3rd floor and, about 20 minutes later or whatever it was, came racing down, pale and shaking. He claimed he saw a "old style German soldier" walking down the corridor towards him then turn and walk through the wall! Freaked the poor guy right out!

BMH Iserlohn also reputedly had a few patients still kicking around who never got signed out...parts of the hospital were downright creepy, actually, and even the toughest squaddie often refused to go anywhere near certain areas alone. Big babies!!!....

were built after WW 1. I fort Qu'Apelle - Winklemann Kaserne was named after a WW 1 Artillery NCO. I've mentioned this before some where, that I felt there were ghosts in Qu'Apelle. I had met a German fellow in Iserlohn who stated his brother had been executed in Qu'Apelle near the end of the war.

There's several photo's from the 60's in amongst that lot.

The owner of that blogspot was a member of the Forum, but unforunately left us last year.

He provided a wealth of information to the Forum and the main site. If you look at the Links page, British Army in Iserlohn, Royal Engineers in BAOR, and Royal Signals in BAOR were all built by him.

Paul.

As I thought more on this I came to think it very likely was Qu'Appelle (my dad worked out of there which is how, if memory serves, I ended up working at clearing it out one summer). Both barracks were circa WWI, I believe.

I have no doubt there were some sort of 'presences' in both sets of barracks. Spooky places even in broad daylight!

A lot of Germans that live near or in the grounds of ex military bases can sometimes hear the marching feet of troops.

Okay, I am busily revising the "History" section in the messy library I call my brain....processing....processing....processing....

Okay, no longer thinking the 3-storey barracks such as these Kasernes built under Kaiser Bill. information now replaced with new reality of them being built under Uncle Adolph's regime.

Revision complete.

Beeeeeep!
