| Hello, Following the recent death of an aged relative I found his old Airman's Service and Pay Book amongst his belongings. Some of the entries are from RAF Wunstorf from January to at least June of 1951 and I was wondering if you could help me out with some research I am doing? I am trying to find out a bit more about what he did and what his role was; are you able to help me? His name was Duncan Howie and his number was 1591406 (I think! It is quite difficult to read some of the numbers!). His occupational sub-classification was 044-24 and Industrial Group was C.D. Does this mean anything to you?! He also spent time at RAF Sylt in May of the same year. I understand that you may not be able to help but would really appreciate it if you could help. It would also be amazing if there was someone who knew Duncan at this time in his life. Thank you very much for your time, Eloise Mason. | |

| Welcome Eloise, I hope we can help you in some way. My own thoughts are that he could have been a National Serviceman, and some of the details you quote are connected to that. But I am sure that I will be corrected if I am wrong Is there any chance that you could scan and post the details of the Pay Book? There may be details on the page/s that you may not understand (with the greatest respect), and that a ground-hugger like me would not understand, as against our R.A.F. members. If you have any problems with that you are most welcome to contact me either by PM or e-mail. Paul. | |

| Hi Paul,
No problems at the moment - I've just been very busy and haven't had time to scan the book yet.

| I have not been able to clarify the trade titles as yet - I am hoping that one of our RAF types may be able to help out there.
I thik I have identified a couple of Flying Squadrons that were possibly at Wunstorf around that time, and the aircraft type seems to be mainly Vampires and Venoms.
11 Squadron may have been one, with 26 Squadron being another. As we are not sure yet of Duncan's trade at that time, it is not really possible to say who he may have been with. I would be reasonably sure though that he was not aircrew, but am open to correction there.
