Hello everybody,

I'm looking for my old friend Nigel Barber, who lived in Osnabrueck Quebec Barracks in 1977 and later. He will be about 55 years old now.

Thank you for sending any informations.

Is that so you can go into his ribs for child-support?

Just as an aside, and sorry if this takes it off-topic, but how did a British set of barracks end up with a Canadian name like Quebec?

Inheriting Canadian barracks and perhaps keeping the name, I can see (although that didn't happen in the instances where BAOR did actually inherit Canadian barracks in Deilinghofen/Hemer/Iserlohn/Werl/Soest), but this is different. Would be interested in knowing a bit of the background/history to that.

Possibly after the Battle of Quebec between England and France (with Mass. thrown in).

i use a lot of sites, forces sites and networking sites like facebook, friendsre united when i try and trace people, i came across a nigel barber in his fifties on friends reunited his profile said he had been in the corp of enginners from 1976 to 1986 so i then looked at quebec barracks for those years and found a reference for the corps of enginners being based there, sometimes you get lucky sometimes not so sent him an e mail only time will tell, lets hope it is good news for karla.

will fill in my profile so people will know a bit about me,have enjoyed reading all the threads and it took me back to some happy times , i am based in manchester but the site map shows me in some unusual places.

Paul.

That's what I sort of thought...referring, I assume, to the epic battle on the Plains of Abraham, just below Quebec City, between Wolfe and Montcalm? It was this battle that ended French hegemony in North America and established what was to become Canada as a British colony rather than a French one. Quebec, and Quebecois, have never got over it!

In fact, the anniversary of the battle just came and went and there were plans to re-enact the battle on the Plains of Abraham (and Paul McCartney was to perform!) but there was such a hue and cry raised by the separatist party (and, believe it or not, folks, the Bloc Quebecois, who are secessionists, are a federal party, although certainly not federalist, and sit in Parliament!!) it was cancelled. I believe the re-enactment took place down in New York somewhere...bizarre, but then welcome to Canadian politics LOL

Hey, sparkling skills there, Oldtimer. I just love it when things like that come to a satisfactory conclusion.

I'm also glad for Karla that she finally found the geezer she was seeking. I mean, what are the chances of that happening, eh?

Great stuff.

There is a wealth of information amongst all of us, that's for sure, and it is great when we can lend a hand and help someone find someone or get further info on something.

At some point, just about anyone who spent time in Germany during the BAOR period checks, or is going to check, out this site bringing their own perspective along but also that little bit of info or knowledge of other sites with them. Such was the case here and I'm glad as well Karla was able to track down her Nigel Barber.

I was trying to track down and get in touch with the family who 'adopted' me during my time in Soest in '73-'74 and was finally able to do it via the Irish Rangers' website. I did hear from them which was great then the carrier I was using for email ended (or rather my contract with them did) and I lost touch again. However, it was great to be in some correspondence and catch up. That family was so important to me during that year and they hold a special place in my heart even after all this time.

I think it's actually pretty amazing that those who are on such sites as this and other Old Boy sites, or Army Brat sites too, are so willing to assist others in finding information or people. It's one of the great things about Internet, it really is.

i have always had a very logical brain some folk say weird but thats ok have traced a few people down some for myself some like karla who i happen to see on here,i have been looking in on this site for a long while but never joined till i saw her post.

when i look for people one of the first places i look is friendsreunited they have 19 million members and when you consider the uk population is about 60 million it gives you a 30% chance, thats if they have filled there profile in so its a good start .

i was in germany in the late sixties and loved every minute of it the food the people the countryside ,i can say i dont have one bad memory of the experience.

i am a big fan of motorcycles and ride most days, last year i went back to germany to see friends still out there and visit the camps i was at oh! why did i leave it so long both camps gone but still glad i went back.

glad i could help karla and like you say stephen theres lots of information out there as well as on here. nice to see all your great posts it jogs a few brain cells i had forgot all all about the union jack club.
paul or oldtimer or some of the other things i get called.

Yes ,well done oldtimer. BUT if you want to find someone START NOW.

I traced the love of my life from National Service days a few years back. We spoke on the phone, and I suggested a get-together. "A bit difficult" she said."I have bone cancer" She died amonth or so later. We never had our meeting .

That is so sad, Chemist...my condolences to you. I am glad, however, you managed to at least connect with her via phone. No doubt it brought her some happiness as well.

Absolutely those of us seeking to reconnect with people from back then need to act on it ASAP. None of us is getting any younger, even though I suspect we all have a tendency to think those we might be seeking haven't aged a jot since we last saw them! I know it came as bit of a surprise to me, oddly enough, to see a photo of my best mate from my Soest days. He was no longer the 17-year old with a cowlick that refused to lie down properly, adopting a Canadian way of dressing and mixing his English all up with Canadian idioms and, later, British ones. He had evolved into a stout, balding, eye-glass wearing, proper German 'burgher' and he had grandchildren! He also seemed to carry a certain sadness in behind his eyes that was not there when he was 17! Back then, he was interested in everything, absolutely a man-child, one part Innocent two parts anything but, just as we all were. Life, it seemed, had dealt him a few disappointments (cripes, hasn't it for all of us!).

Ditto on the daughter of the family that adopted me....when I knew her she was interested in going out all the time (I remember her saying to her mom that her day to sit in would arrive soon enough. It did, too), everything was a laugh, she had spirit! The woman I ended up corresponding with had had a difficult life and felt it.

Life throws us all some real curves.

Funny how that can work, eh? She's looking for him, he's looking for her and by "coincidence" they manage to find each other through a 3rd person. Such is the stuff of movies!

I would just like to give a big thanks to any and every one who helped my friend Karla get in touch with me.
I had been trying to find her as well..weird huh?

We are now in touch properly and emailing on a regular basis. This has also inspired me to continue, a little harder, trying to find a couple of friends from college who I lost touch with many years ago.

Again thanks and to someone who thought my friend was after support for a child.....dont be such a cynic!

Most glad that the ending was a happy one, and that friends are in contact again. I suppose you could say that it is a side effect of the site and the Forum.

As for the other friends you are looking for, why not post the details on the Forum - you never know Very Happy

And as for the cynicism (and it wasn't me), I think it is part of service make-up, and was not meant in any bad way.

Paul.
