I had never tasted Potato Salad until I was posted to Germany. The Cookhouse in Lippstadt had a Salad Bar but the only thing that I enjoyed was Potato Salad so, I had it with everything, Mince, Stew, Curry - you name it, it was beautiful. In those days (64) the Menu was starting to improve and Steak was being introduced but, to ensure that you got one you had to be at least in the first 15 in the Hotplate queue, and to ensure fairness it was probably only available once a week.

I agree, Shelldrake....I had tasted Potato Salad previously (not unusual to find it in Canada, even back in the 70s) but I had never "tasted" it until I had some from a German grocery store (probably Spar!)....Heaven!!!! Like you, I ate it with just about everything, even by itself, straight from the tub it came in. Subsequent dealings with what passes for Potato Salad on this side of the Great Pond just do not compare....bland, colourless, borrrriiiinnnggg....

That a German hand job? Shocked

You are correct there hardrations. When we had a corporals club do one of the German wives always made the potato salad and Frickadellen. Much better than the bought ones.

When I was based at Yuma Proving Grounds mince on toast was a breakfast staple with the Yanks, known colloquialy as 's--t on a shingle'.

Never came across that particular delicacy, although a favourite was, for both Americans and Canucks, peanut butter and banana sandwiches! YUM....looked like a dog's breakfast, admittedly, but delicious!!

Then, of course, you bunch ate that concoction known as -- what was it? -- Marmite? Pptuuui....! tongue

Being a member of the Corps and a signatory of the official secrets act, I am unable to answer that question, plus I am a gentleman despite what Brum will say!

How sick is that, Peanut butter and banana? Marmite is one of those things you either love or hate. TBH, I don't know of anyone who likes it or buys it but someone must!

Speaking of tooth-rotting delicacies. As a kid in Birmingham we used to have condensed milk sandwiches.

A Scouser I met in later life called it a Connie Onnie Buttie.

Just the memory makes my teeth ache ! pig

Yeh we call it home and away. Got a bottle some time back. Conny onny butties! Lovely as a kid but the thought just makes me sick now. Any place of work worth their salt put a can in the tea urn back in the days. Didn't need sugar or milk then.

If I knew then what I know now I probably wouldn't have dentures.

When we kids were sent from Hereford into deepest Welsh Wales on Outward Bound training,

the 24 hour ration packs used to have a toothpaste-type tube, filled with condensed milk.

Deep joy !
