Funny thing is that the outgoing Labour Government tied Free Bus Passes to the changes in Pension Ages, but left Free Prescriptions at 60 for Men & Women!

I was having a discussion with an American friend of mine today, about a 'Perfect England' and he wagged his finger at me, and said "Be careful what you wish for my friend, as what works in one country, may not in another" How true that is.

Sorry for the confusion Gordon. I meant the ex Prime Minister as it was his Government that brought in all this bus pass qualification date shifting.

Rather glad that only applies to England and Wales Very Happy I`m quite happy with my travel anywhere in Scotland or as far south as Carlisle bus pass. Also pleased to have free prescriptions, which shall be free for all soon. Laughing Laughing

Talking about free prescriptions. Our experience in Glasgow at a local hospital was quite good. My wife had a bad chest/lung infection. She was treated well at no cost to us, even though I did have my travel insurance with me. Have to all so mention that Scots hospitality is outstanding and generous.

this is a personal situation [i am NOT looking for sympathy]when i left the army i transfered my pension rights to a local government scheme, some years later i had a fairly bad accident at work as a result i had to retire due to ill health, this actually worked out pretty well pension wise,we were able to live without claiming any benefits apart from incapacity and industrial injuries benefit,i have just turned 60 and had to attend an assessment for work medical,i managed to fail this and as a result have lost my incapacity benifit, the only official benefit i now have to live on is £43 pw,[because of my private pension i am entitled to no help],these procedures must have been in place before the new gov was elected,so at least i am saving them some money.

I wonder about that too. Lately it seems that each time I am getting near to a milestone, some b***** moves the goalposts. Even my company has changed its pension scheme rules. We were originally geared up to retire at 60 and that has been pushed back to 65. I can of course still retire at 60 but will take a big hit out of my pension.

Roll on death- demobs too far away Very Happy

@ dandc, My brother transferred his pension to a private pension scheme, he wishes he's never done it now, his 12 year Army pension is almost worthless now.

@ mjm, luckily for me I seem to be just over the cusp of where it all changes, not so my missus, and she is well pissed off with it, she is a snivelling servant and was due to retire at 60, now she has to work to 63 before she gets her CS pension.

Over here Canada way. It's our service pension and Canada Pension Plan take a hit at age 65. Some how the govt has figured away to screw us over. The past govt.'s gutted our surplus to pay for their mistakes.Mind you we do have an MP who is fighting for our rights. But the low life politician's in general can't see their way clear to do the honest thing for the Services and RCMP. (RCMP are part of the Armed Forces the average Joe doesn't really realize it).

That's one of lifes mysteries Mike. It doesn't go anywhere, just disappears into a black hole. Evidently it is called capitalism and as you say someone made a killing as per usual.

I read somewhere once that people such as Henry Ford and other billionaires actually caused the stock market crash in 1929 or at least encouraged it to make a massive killing and raise unemployment so that they virtually had a slave labour force. Mind you I like a conspiracy theory.

The billions lost were mainly due to sub prime loans, i.e. giving people mortgages who would never be able to pay them back, this led to a slump in the value of the homes that had been bought and people just defaulted on them.

Getting back to what we would import from Germany to our own countries.....what about paid vacations? I don't mean vacation pay, as we have in Canada with some companies (with the option to either take your money and go on vacation or work and get your usual wage plus your vacation pay even though the company I work for frowns on that (go figure!) and pretty much insists its employees take their time). I mean having your firm/company pay for your two weeks or whatever in Majorca or the South of France or what-have-you, sending you to a company owned or company sponsored resort.

Now I might be a bit off on this as I didn't pay much attention to it all back in the day, but it seems to me at least during the 70s that your average labourer and his family were able to toddle off to where ever on the company dime...er....mark....er shilling...er....euro....geez....

Seems an okay deal to me. Now I suppose the restriction on that would have been one had to go to a prescribed resort or holiday site and as I recall Herr Schmidt und frau did spend their 2 weeks in the company of Herr Schmidt's fellow workers (not much of a break!) but it was still up at a nice place along the North Sea or Friesenland or what-have-you. Meals and accommodation paid for, perhaps a few bus tours tossed in.

Try that here and howls of "Socialism!!!" would ring out across the land (forgetting, of course, that even under Stephen Harper's Conservative gov't Canada is still, basically, a socialist country...not "socialist" in the sense the USSR and its satellites were. More "socialist" in the sense of Sweden, for instance, although certainly that is open to debate since we are not "officially" socialist which so many associate with being State-ist).
