We've all heard it, VD and scar etc. Photographed a grave today, Colonel Francis Usher Holme VD.

Commanded the 1st VB The Kings (Liverpool Regt). A Volunteer soldier from 1859 - 1906.

VB possibly Volunteer Battalion? What is the VD and no clap jokes please. Very Happy

I think it could be the Volunteer Decoration which was a long service medal given to auxillary army officers of the British Empire between 1894 and 1931. The dates fit. I confess, the wording came from Wikepedia, but it solves the mystery of a grave I once saw with that on.

Really, yes we used to joke about that. Volunteer Decoration or Volunteer Medal I wonder.

It will be the equivelant to the current TD (Territorial Decoration) awarded to the TA.

Then there is the Canadian Forces Decoration or better know as the C.D. that is awarded for 12 years undiscovered crime and a bar for each 10 years following. Until computers came along, many members would not apply for it as the militia (Reserves now) were all so eligible to receive it for just being on the nominal role as compared to Regular Forces living 24 hrs a day in the job. Mind you now a days if it wasn't for the reserves the Canadian Forces could not meet their commitments.

Now that I have been promoted to WO 1 would this be an appropriated juncture to put in a "Plea of Mitigation (s)" for my LS & GC?
