| hi, i served in the 9/12 royal lancers in omagh, each troop had 2 ferret scout cars,2 landrovers and 1 saracen. there was a scorpion there as i drove it a few times but i cant remember seeing a fox. the scorpion was there for conversion training,it was not allowed anywhere where the civillian population might see it as this might cause panic. when we went to germany, a and c squadron had 2 scorpions and 2 scimitars per troop and b squadron had 8 fox per troop because they were close recce |

| As far as I can recall, the Fox never served with any regular armoured units, it was farmed out to the Yeomanry (TA), which may explain sightings in NI. The TA in NI weren't employed alongside the regulars there, but continued on with their NATO role. We (the Brits) did try to flog it off to some Arab/North African countries, but as the thing was top heavy and prone to rolling over (there had been a couple of fatalities over the years), there were very few takers. There were a couple of them at Cambrai Bks in Catterick (the old RAC Training School) when SCOTS DG were there and there are photographs of the Fox being used on ceremonial duties for their Tercentenary in Edinburgh. The Ayrshire Yeomanry used to bring them over to BAOR on the large exercises, but I don't recall the vehicle ever having been used by any regular Armoured unit.
There are claims on Wiki that the Fox replaced the Ferret. It didn't. Both vehicles had different roles and the Ferret soldiered on for a lot longer than the Fox. |

| firstly, thanks for the welcome jim next as i said before B sqn 9/12 were close recce which meant that when an armoured brigade would deploy the designated troop from B sqn would go with them even to canada and such places, that is why they had 8 fox per troop. when we were posted to munster, we had to go to Osnabruck to teach driver training to The Kings Own Scottish Borderers as they were having there own recon platoon equipped with 8 fox, that was in 1980. |

| Steve,
It was Exercise 'Crusader 80' that 15Fld Wksp Reme Repair Section were repairing Fox n exercise led by the Tiffy Ian Donald... I think the Repair Section was on Detachment to 1 Br Corps Tp Wksp for that excercise?
Although I was 15 Fld as well. I was spammed on what was a cushy number doing 'Umpire.'
I am not sue whether the Fox under repair were from a BAOR or UK Unit!!
Alan
