PostSubject: Dad was at Bad Salzuflen at Xmas 1945   Sun Feb 22, 2009 8:14 pm

Hi
I have a christmas card which my dad sent to his parents from Germany at Christmas 1945.
I know he was in the army of occupation, but he never ever spoke to us about what he did during the war. He died suddenly in 1980 at the age of 65, and I am trying to find out what he did in the war.
The front of the card has a print of a pen or pencil drawing of a steet with a church, and the words Bad Salzuflen below.
I know that Bad Salzuflen is a place in Germany which is famous for its natural springs.
The inside of the card bears a printed christmas greeting and "best wishes for Xmas and the new year" signed by Dad.
Below that is printed:
TOC H
B.A.O.R.
Christmas 1945.
I know what TOC H and BAOR are, but know nothing else.
His name was William Edward How, and I know he was in the RASC, as I have seen his demob papers. I know also that he was a motor mechanic and a driver. He was a private at the time of his demob, and I recall him saying that he was once made a lance jack, in order that he could drive an american officer around, losing the stripe again later.
That is all I know, and I just wanted to find out whether there was a large british base near Bad Salzuflen, and whether anyone can fill in any details or point me to where I can find info re his service postings.

Regards
Phil How

Phill,

You did post this before here, and I did reply to it:-

http://bfg-locations.editboard.com/bad-salzuflen-f103/dad-was-at-bad-salzuflen-in-1945-t372.htm

There is also some detail here:-

http://baor-locations.com/badsalzuflen.aspx

As you will see, Bad S was quite close to three areas that held miltary units. Does it give an actual unit on his discharge papers?

PostSubject: War 2   Thu Mar 26, 2009 6:15 pm

Hallo,

My dad was in Bad Salzuflen around that time, I was born 1947, so it is before my time, but he / we were there until 1953, so I remember bits, and my dad did talk about things.

While we were there there was a big Intelligence / Military Police set up to deal with the newly formed SOXMIS (Soviet Military Mission), this will have included a lot of Drivers and Mechanics, and of course would have worked closely with the Americans.

Perhaps he was there in on the start of it all, rather than covering something to do with the end of the War !

I remember there was a TOC H close to where we lived and I used to go there with my mother.

edited to add - There was also an Int Det at Bad Oeynhausen, but I think this was being set up, because SOXMIS moved their HQ to Bunde.
