When I was an ASA I Marched a Captain in the RAChD into a MQ in Mytchett. I later found out that he had been part of the team involved in the Iranian Embassy siege. Apparently he had written a book which wasn't very complimentary and was confined to the MQ whilst the powers that be decided what to do with him. He later committed suicide, it was all very sad.

| I know an even sadder git than that folks. This guy used to dress up as a Para with the Dennison Smock etc and parade around the toon chatting up the lassies and telling them that he served in 3 Para.He even had campaign medals on the smock to show them.He originally joined the Artillery but for some reason he left.He never served in the Paras and the only jumping he ever did was aff a bus. | |

| Yes we did have Paliasses in Willsworthy camp doing an annual comms exercise with local ruffty tuftys who were preparing for their pass out. One of them and one of us would be connected by ubilical cord and proceed across the Tors. Guess who was carrying the light manpack and who was carrying the HEAVY lead acid batt. We could post a letter at our RV point which was collected once a year. We had a Bugler to sound the various calls in camp. | |

| Ah, yes, next month on Armistice Day Parade, the 'Walts' will be out in force, including all those who were 10 or 11 years old in 1981 at the time of the Falklands War. You can generally spot some of them as they sport World War Two medals, and sometimes even World War One medals bought in a antiques shop. Oh, yes, and the various Regimental ties and blazer badges displayed, even of units that are no longer in existence.
Every small village or town will have it's quotas of 'Walts' trying to blend in with the genuine ex-military. Apparently in the States, Oz, Canada etc; being caught 'Walting' can carry a prison sentence on conviction. So should we have such legislation here in the UK to 'out' them, or should these sad geezers be allowed to live their fantasies, as the hand wringing, bleating, whining Left would say that they are...'hurting nobody!.

| I cannot understand people who impersonate others like this. My father served in the second WW and had a buscuit tin full of medals which never saw the light of day. On rememberance sunday he would observe the silence whilst watching the proceedings on TV and then off to the working mans club for a few beers with his ex army mates. | |

| With all the current interest in the D-Day landing of 1944 etc, I cannot remember where I saw this, but one Walt was 'outed' because he had claimed that he was on Mount Longdon in the Falklands, and it turned out he was only 8 or 9 years old at the time in 1981, when somone checked his story. the other thing that apparently gave him away was an Artic Convoy medal and one or two from the First World War..... Poor geezer......bought them as a job lot from an antiques shop somewhere. Hmm, I always did like dressing up.... not in ladies clothes I hasten to add, but in nice shiny, shiny ammo boots, a big hat and smart Number 2's. After pounding square for many a year back in the 1960s, my kneees and ankles ain't what they used to be, and anyway I don't feel like going a Walting in old age.... I just cannot be arrsed..... and anyway the In Pensioners uniform they wear at the Chelsea Pensioners tooks a tad dated now, and it don't wow the ladies any more... Nurse Olga only lets me out if I promised to behave meself after a double dose of Bromide in my morning coffee....... Hmm, I need to get out more now the summer is here.... | |
