I take it then that long service will be dropped nowadays as the MOD are kicking people out as quickly as they are joining up.You don't get people joining up nowadays for twenty two years or more.More like the average six years.

When did they lower the years served to fifteen years for an award of the LSGC or LS medal as I believe it is called now.........I think.I believe it was twenty two years unblemished record to get it or that you managed to steer clear of trouble or were never caught. No No

rucjock, the qualifying period was 18 years undetected (or detected , with a plea of mitigation, eg "A big boy did it and ran away) crime, since Lcpl Jones was a Private. It was reduced, for some unknown reason, to 15 years around the mid to late '70s. I think that there was also a financial award at one time, on completion of 22 years, not sure how much probably a Guinea or a Groat.

I don't know about all the former but, in the mid 70s, our Tara asked me if I'd put in for my Rooti Gong, to which I replied "SIR, NO SIR !"
Having heard my reply, and commenting that he did not know that you could stack shit five feet ten inches high, he informed me that one could now get the medal after 18 years, not the 22yrs that was previously the rule.

"15 years in the 60s" ? Not to my knowledge.

SIR !

Yes.I was wrong.

Quote :
The medal was originally awarded to soldiers of good conduct who had completed 21 years service in the infantry or 24 years in the cavalry. In 1870, this qualifying period was reduced to 18 years for both the infantry and cavalry.

Today, the Long Service & Good Conduct Medal (Army) is awarded to members of the British Army who have completed 15 years of reckonable service

Before 1 December 1977 18 years of service was required for consideration for the LS&GCM (Army).

I got mine in 73 - 18 years including boys service, I believe it is the only award where boys service counts.

Left boys service in 1957 got LS&GC in 1973, either the qualifying period had changed or boys service counted. Qualifying service is from date of attestation or 17.5 years old which ever is the later, in my case date of attestation was 1954. Question Question

Looks likes 17.5 is the later.Which means you got yours at 35.5yrs which is around 1973 by my calculations and does not include boys service.

Like the Pension, Boys Service does not count towards the LS&GC. I was eligible for mine in Dec 78 but it was lost in the Post. Suspect

The time has come to grovel and offer my humble apologises, I should know better than to query what my superiors have said. Had I bothered to check my copy of Army Form B6987, Statement of Army Service, and not rely on my memory - dangerous at our age, I would have seen that I got the LS&GC in 1974 after 18 Years service from age 17.5. At the tender age of 17.5 I was still in Boys service and would continue as such for a further 15 months so that period of boys service counted towards earning the medal.
