Hi lads,
Any of you guys ever drink in Hans Meyers, or the Muller Bar in Bielefeld in the late 60s early 70s. I served with 14 Sqn RCT at the time. But spent a lotta time in these 2 pubs. Great memories and times (sigh). Very Happy

Drinking holes... hmmm

Bielefeld - 1980s and 90s, Caddys in town, never a turk and barely a German (male) to be seen. 1990s - ratskeller.

Spot on there. Still on the same subject a month or so ago 2 guys both Officers through the ranks came into our local pub. They were on leave from Germany. They left my mate a case of Paderborner pils. They said they would be back in the village,Paull E Yorks, around Xmas and they would bring some more. They were nice guys so I hope they return. Very Happy

No offence Dusty but Paderborner Pils was pisswater - never even made Herforder standard and by German beers thats rubbish - Warsteiner or Bitburger is what you should drink for a nice, smooth German Bier!

Personal favourite was the Jagerheim - just off the strip at Sennelager. Had huge bottles of Bracken on the bar. Potent stuff! Friendly place. Sadly the music tended to be american country but I forgave them that!

I can remember back in the 60's going out in Padabourn one evening with a few mates for a drink and meeting up with a few lads from Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and a few lads from the Royal Green Jackets. God what a night! We where drinking flaming Steinhäger and Jever Pilsner all night. I just don't remember how we got back to camp. I got 7 days guard duty for missing my duty's. Needless to say I have never touched that stuff ever again

What about Dortmunder Kronung...or 'Dortmunder Crazy K' as it was known by the troops? I was never a fan of Herfie but if that was all there was then it was all academic and it got supped. I did like Paderborner, but Warsteiner has to be the best beer I've ever drank.

The Hole in the Wall in Dortmund (an old bomb shelter)

The Blue Tavern in Dortmund.

Both interesting places to drink and meet people. Can't believe I lived to remember those places.

What about Gasthof Becker and Gasthog Berghof in Soest? Also the dive we used to call "The Last Chance" up past the bahnhof beside the rail yards? For some reason or other the married guys never took their wives there.

My favourite was the Zum Forsthaus just below the barracks on the Wickederstrasse by Werl. I think there's an autobahn running through its former site according to what I see on google.

I personally prefer DAB, and which is always available from my local "Bargain Booze" outlet.
The strange (or not so strange) thing is that the chap in the shop commented that he mainly sells it to blokes of a certain age!!

Tony, I think the Bar you are referring to in Sennelager run by an Ex RSM might be Bill Days Bar at the top of Ring Strasse. Last time I visited it was run by a Greek family and had undergone a name change to (surprise, surprise) The Akropolis. Can anyone tell me how I can bring my profile up under my name?

I remember (hazily) most of them, I think Jocks was Zum Tower, ran by an Ex Bdr from 24 Msl Regt. There was also the Heidekotten on Ring Strasse which was decked out (early 70s) to resemble a Country and Western Bar.
