PostSubject: 7 Signal Regient, Herford   18/4/2011, 20:31

Hi all,

Just thought I would put 7 Signal Regt on the map so to speak.
First came across them as 1 Corps Signal Regt in Herford - 1952. They were either in Wentworth or Hammersmith Barracks. I was in Harewood Barracks on the Ringstrasse at the time.

I joined 7 Sigs in 1963 and left 1966. A thoroughly good Regt. Spent sometime with QM department then over the bridge to 1 Sqn.

Did a few quarter guards under the direction of RSM Jack Gerard - now there was an RSM.
Here's a picture of such a quarter guard around 1964 to honour the visit of the 1 Corps Signals Chief - the late Brig MS Hancock R Sigs.
Yours truly is the Guard Sgt andnext to be is Cpl Brian Maltby (someone mentioned him and he finished as A Major TOT)

Anyone else served in 7 Sigs ?

Brum,

I havn't the faintess - first time I have noticed this. Can only think it was Jack Gerrard's idea for the Sgt to not display a bayonet - you eagle-eyed bu**er

Gordon,

Nice picture of Jack. Seen this one before somewhere.
Yes, that is RSM Crabtree but his name was Alan - his younger brother , a RR Sgt in my troop was known as 'Mo' (Maurice). AFN Crabtree did eventually get comissioned and retired as a Capt. Now deceased.

Hi Fellas,

I wouldn't need a bayonet in a charge 'cause born with the ugly stick it would frighten 'em to death.

I must ask.

Thinking back to the 70's BFBS days. Was not 7 Sigs stationed in Bunde at some time ?

It was the request programmes, you got to know where everyone was stationed from listening to them.

If it wasn't 7 Sigs in Bunde then who was it ?

You are correct Gordon,

R Sig Unit initially based in Bunde was 6 Armd Div Sig Regt from 1952 - 1958 when it was disbanded.

Then 2 Div Sig Regt(changed name to 2 Sig Regt then 2 Armd Sig Regt) moved to Birdwood bks from Hilden June 1958

Then they moved to York in Jan 1983 as 2 Inf Div/ 656 Sig Tp

Think that's how the scenerio went.

When I was with 7 Sigs, used to take my eldest Son (now 49) to Bunde on Sundays to get the newspaper and for the ride in my old Borward Isabella. Used to regularly see the SOXMIS car along this route, although I think they were based in Bad Salzuflen.

Yes Jim Soxmis were based at Bad Salzuflen.
Used to get them hanging around the north camp gate.I remember a gate sentry coming off stag and lighting up a Russian cig. When asked where he got it replyed "A guy with a funny accent gave it to me". clown

Gordon,

We were always told that whenever we saw a Soxmis car we were to report the details to the RMPs. If I remember there was an RMP place on the left, going from Herford to Bunde. The RMPs got fed up with the reports. So after a time we never used to bother.

Bet the dentist was a spy and hid things in their fillings. Seen it in a movie once I think?
