Went to a concert last night in Whitley Bay by the Heavy Cavalry and Cambrai Band in aid of Help for Heroes, and very good it was too. The thing which threw me was the bands title which I was not familiar with. I turns out that they are the Band for the QDG, RDG, RSDG and RTR, with the Light Cavalry Band supporting the rest of the Armoured Corps. Talking to the Director of Music, it seems that the military bands are under threat of further reductions. Hate to think of the outcome even fewer bands to support the Army, just imagine No1 Army Band for the RAC, No2-Inf, Nos 3&4 - The Corps and Finally the Guards Big Band !!!

Not as far fetched as one might think..Now that the Scittish regiments have been amalgamated, the next step is to amalgamate the bands..That will mean four less...Not so bad if you hate pipe music Laughing

Gordon
The Royal Regiment of Scotland only have one military band whose mucicians are members of the Corps of Army Music (CAMUS), as are all the other members of military bands and they can be posted between bands as is normal in any Corps. The pipe bands are not members of CAMUS but of the regiment they are serving in, a piper is first and foremost a soldier and serve as a nomal infantry soldier on Ops, same as the Corps of Drums in English/Welsh Inf Regts, same applies to pipers in Irish Regts and the RSDG. So I am afraid Gordon that the only way pipe bands will be reduced is by the disbandment of complete Regts.

That`s comforting news Bob,Let`s hope they don`t disband the regiment,we don`t want seven battalions to disappear.

Are they not termed as Battalion "Pipes & Drums" as they are not bands, having no other instruments!

From the British Army website

Quote :
Each battalion of the Regiment has its own Band of Pipes and Drums manned by soldiers who receive their musical training at the Army School of Bagpipe Music and Highland Drumming in Edinburgh.

The Regiment also has its own Military Band formed from soldiers of the Corps of Army Music, and the 6th and 7th Battalions each have a Military Band made up of Territorial Army musicians. These Bands are known as the Band of The Royal Regiment of Scotland, The Lowland Band and The Highland Band of The Royal Regiment of Scotland. These Bands are an intrinsic part of the Regiments life

The Edinburgh Military Tattoo was held in Sydney a couple of years ago. Went and saw it, brilliant, plenty of UK forces, RM, Scottish Regiments, Brigade of Guards, plus Aussies of course.

Never seen it at Edinburgh Castle, but it would be great. Have been to the Castle.

Now Regimental Marches: Anyone know the Regimental March of the Army Catering Corps?

No it is not 'At McDonalds, we have it all ! affraid

Hate pipes???????? There was a time one could -- and probably should have been! -- hanged from the yardarms for such a sentiment!! Nothing stirs the blood more than the swirl of well played pipes. Or scare the pants off the enemy, for that matter. Or get the dogs howling either.....but, for myself, I LOVE hearing bagpipes!

As an aside....my dad was big on all things military and, as well as being a career soldier was also a military historian and collector (cap badges etc...one of the largest collections, at the time, in Canada) so of course we took in a few Tattoos while he was stationed in Germany....fantastic stuff! Went to one in Cologne, I think it was, 1970-ish?

Anyway, why are these spectacles -- and they are certainly that! -- called "Tattoos"? I'm sure they have nothing to do with skin art.
