The only reason I cared was because I was RAPC attached to 12 Armd Wksp there (as it then was). Must admit I have been looking at it on Live Maps and, having once blown away the cobwebs from me memory the REME camp hasn't changed an iota in the 22 years since I left.

REME are moving to Catterick in December 2008. Which looks like the end of Osnabruck Garrison.

| My Father was stationed in Quebec Bks as a Lancashire Fusileer.
We lied in Kleine Moscow and I remember going swimming at Roberts Bks during summer holidays when I was home from PRS

| The way I understand it: There will be a 'skeleton staff' until well into 2009 to dot the t's and cross the i's - likewise, Münster will be similar... if not taking longer to thin-out.
I was at Quebec Bks 1996-98 and the Germans built a bus stop on camp - outside of RHQ - the cynics stated "well, that's it - the camp will close soon - the Germans are building inside the wire. We'll be handing over soon...". 'Soon' being 10 years later! Stragely enough I never saw any German pensioners come onto camp to get the bus to the post office.
Note: the IRA tried to close it in '97 - but failed miserably. The only good thing about their attack was that they hit the cookhouse and the WKSP got a day off work (though my G1098 store was unscathed - damn!).
Sad for me that the Garrison is finishing as my missus is from the area and I was hoping to get one of those easy, civvie, mincers jobs on one of the camps when I get out. Looks like I'll have to pull my finger out and get a proper job... or a divorce!

| Archie, I laughed at your comment about having to get your butt in gear or be headed to divorce court (you are kidding, I'm sure!). Not my business so I do apologize in advance but I can't resist a cheeky aside, that being, "make sure your civvie job pays more than a possible divorce!" Good luck! BTW, has it stoped snowing in Osnabruck, yet? Wish I could say the same for Alberta! |

| ref. QUEBEC BKS OSNABRUCK and units located there :-
It is noted that on the website no mention is made of 16 Light Ack Ack Regt RA who were housed in Quebec Bks when 6 Armd Div ( Div sign White Mailed Fist on Black) were based on Osnabruck. Not sure of date of first occupation, but it must have been early post-WW2.
!6 LAA Regt comprised 26 Bty RA, 30 (Roger's Coy) Bty RA & 32 (Minden) Bty RA. Each bty had an HQ Tp and 2 gun tps.( Tps A, B,..... D, E...... & G, H. Addition of a third gun tp. in each Bty. would bring them up to war establishment ). Each gun tp. had 6 guns. Initially these were 40mm L60 Bofors SPs mounted on Morris Commercial chassis. Around 1953 these were replaced with the L60 Bristol Bofors, which had electrically powered traversing & elevation. This equipment was operated by a single layer and was aimed through a reflector sight. Electrical power was from batteries mounted on the gun platform & towing was by Fordson 3-Tonner tractors, odd vehicles in that the mechanicals & chassis were by Ford, but the cab was of a Commer design.
16 LAA Regt RA remained in Quebec Bks. until April 1956 when they were re-located to Bulford and some personnel were detached to form a Movement Light unit in Cyprus.
At the same time as the LAA unit was in residence at Quebec Bks., there was a Locating Bty. too. (Not sure of their title........ 148 Bty springs to mind). They were completely independent and I believe they operated 3mk 7F radar equipment for mortar location. They occupied blocks 10 & 11 beside the sports field at the end of the accommodation lines.
