As usual whilst researching an aspect of the RE presence in BAOR/BFG (and not finding the answers) i did find the following
page at RE Museum which answers many of the questions raised in various parts of this site concerning the structure of the Corps,
presence in Theatre, Unit formats, movements  & Orbats:

https://www.re-museum.co.uk/

https://www.re-museum.co.uk/contact-us/

Unfortunately it still seems to be work in progress for separate specialist Divisions of the RE effort,
under two distinctive headings, which were (eventually) hived off to other Corps of the Army:

1)   Transportation and Movements Control  work in progress -

but a particular interest in the Railway Operating Companies - and locally interest
in the Detmold Military Railway from 1945 based at Longmoor Barracks (formerly Werre Kaserne near the rail freight station at
Paulinenstrasse Detmold)

- 153 RO Coy RE?  (OC and 170 OR) which became 348 Railway Operating Coy in 1947
 -  School of Rail Operations (Permanent Way, Signals and Locos (Austerity Class 2-8-0 ?)*  20 students per course mainly National Servicemen

(see also 960 ROC RE at Brunswick serving freight to Berlin from 1946 having moved out from Magdeburg)

(see also Obit :https://www.scotsman.com/news/obituaries/obituary-allan-garraway-mbe-railway-preservationist-manager-and-engineer-1-3652927 a former Captain RE 1947 - 49 at Detmold who had been locomotive superintendent)

2)   Postal  work in progress

*Looking forward to Railwaymen memoirs from Detmold and Monchengladbach

Thanks but the link seems to be down at the moment

Currently recording every single RE unit while researching the early days of BAOR, there were no regiments (except in 79 Armoured Division) then just Army Group/Corps/Divisional/General HQ Troops, the first recorded was 23 Field Engineer Regiment RE formed 10 Jun 48 from the 2 Infantry Division RE in Mons Barracks Iserlohn

Post VE day each infantry division had 3 x field companies (one per brigade) and a field support company including a bridging platoon, an armoured division 2 x field squadrons (one per brigade) and a field support squadron, on 1 May 47 all companies became squadrons

Will be some time before being able to publish a register (details are very complex) in the meantime will if required look up a unit or who was at a certain location

BTW have found 153 Railway Operating Company RE, recorded in Lage (Lippe) before moving to Detmold and renamed 348 Railway Operating Company 14 Jul 46

PostSubject: NEUMUNSTER 1945-46   R Engrs in BAOR 1945 et seq (Divisions, Units and Locs) Icon_minitime11/10/2018, 04:07

Hello. I'm new to the site but am trying to find info on BAOR in Neumunster late 1945 to early 1946.

Can anyone provide info on 3 Army Field Survey Depot, RE (or a detachment of it) in Neumunster during that period?

I have an old photo of a German couple (friends of my late father) sent from Boostedler Strasse 76, Neumunster.  I am wondering if that was nearby a barracks or possibly billets.??

Thanks

Welcome

10 Nov 45 – 3 Army Field Survey Depot moved from the Naval Arsenal Walstedt
to Gartenstrasse 10, Neumünster, today a restaurant, this was the unit headquarters also the office of the Deputy Assistant Director Survey 8 Corps District, billets would have been all over the town as in most cases the barracks were full of inmates.

Appreciated Steve, that is very helpful.

If you should come across any other info about what work 3 Depot did in Neumunster or any other info would you please post.

Thanks again

With the help of other forum members and copies of original documentation from the Public Records Office in Kew London, able to put together the early days of BAOR, will pass on further detail if found.
