Hi

Would anyone to able to advise if this Unit was stationed in Osnabrück, Germany in the late 1960's.

If so, where and when?

I think in later years they may have ben at Barnard Castle, Co Durham.

Many thanks in advance for any info that can be given.

No record of their location in BAOR but, from 1967 - 1970 they were, as you say, stationed in Stainton Camp, Barnard Castle.

Thanks Shelldrake, picked up that should be Brigade not Division as 5th Infantry Division became 1st Division BAOR in 1960.

Something is not quite correct, have in my book collection “A Short History of the 5th Infantry Brigade” including the 1962 to 1965 Order of Battle, hand written by former commander Brigadier DH Davies MC, showing 1 and 5 Ordnance Field Park RAOC under command.

The Bde HQ was in Iserlohn from 1947 to 1964 then to Tidworth, my detailed research finishes December 1948 for now, so unable to help further with a location.

HQ 5 Airportable Bde was in Tidworth for many years and served in Ulster at the very beginning of the troubles late 1969 and for a second time 1971/2, I served with them for a month being a member of advance party of HQ 3 Inf Bde in early 1972, so must assume the 5 Ordnance Field Park were in the Tidworth area then.

“History is a mystery and only as good as those who wrote it down”

BTW “A Short History of the 5th Infantry Brigade” is available for sale on eBay as surplus to requirements and need help to fund https://britisharmyingermany.com

Many thanks both of you for your input on this.

I may have some details wrong myself but having asked my Dad this weekend he says he was in the Royal Army Ordnance Corps.

I'm not sure about the 5 Infantry devision bit, the only reason I got that is he has a silver cigarette box with 'From 5 OFP' engraved on it when he was a 2nd Lieutenant.

I know his regiment were definitely in Osnabrück in 1967 and came back to Stainton Camp afterward. He became a Lieutenant after but left and joined NAAFI as a District Manager for the shops and clubs.

As a kid, we were posted out to Iserlohn too, although this was when he worked for NAAFI and we lived in Hemer, outside Iserlohn. WE also later did a tour out at Herford.

I guess I need to sit down with him and ask him all about it properly. I saw him at the weekend and was telling me all about his time at Welbeck College and Sandhurst and it was truly fascinating.....just didn't really have the time to talk more.

Thanks for all your help and info.
